Destiny "Raids"

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I'm not a console gamer and I'm not very familiar with Destiny.

Is there an easy way (either in-game or outside of it) to coordinate players for raids?

Here's the deal: I have an 11 year old son who loves Destiny. But he doesn't have any online friends who play the game and as a parent, I've been hesitant to allow him to add strangers as friends (and I haven't allowed in-game communication).

But he's infatuated with these raids. He's watched tons of youtube walkthroughs and badly wants to do them.

I told him if he aced his social studies test I would do some research for him. He got a 91%.

So here I am.

From what he's told me: raids take a long time (2-3 hours to complete), require several players, require communication (to coordinate and get through puzzles....I'd be ok with that even if he did hear bad swears which he hears on youtube anyway...) and are generally very challenging but fun.

Thanks in advance for any advice and assistance you can provide!

If he has a smart phone or ipad I use one of the Destiny LFG apps for picking up people. However, there is no way to screen them.

There is a matchmaking on some of the smaller raids.

2-3 hours for the big raids seem low. Might be more like 3-4 until he gets VERY good at them. Kings Fall takes a decent amount of time.

Thanks! I just did a search and found a Destiny LFG site that appears to be a solution. Yikes, those raids are a real time commitment!

IMO reddit is better then the LFG sites. there is also a sherpas subreddit for people who have never run it to run it with people who will basically carry you

Heh when people were doing them the first time with no guides and no clue of the mechanice it took 6hours or longer for some teams to complete it. They aren't too bad now because most people know what to do and can just explain it pretty simply. Stand here when we tell you, jump out when we say, shoot this spot when it opens up etc. It's all pretty basic really once you do it a couple of times.

Headset is a must, you must be able to communicate and call out certain things that are happening or that you are doing. Most people are pretty laid back about it though. Only a few times have I been in a group with someone who is the stereotypical CoD kid. More often than not it's guys playing after work or after class and they just want to relax a bit and maybe boost their character with some gear.

Thanks for the info. My kid has watch/studied hours of Youtube walkthroughs. He swears he can assist any team (I was worried that since he hadn't actually been part of a raid that he would be a liability and frustrate other team members.....he still might, but I'm less worried about it considering one much detail he's been telling me).

I noticed that some of the posts on redit and the app say "no mic". Does that mean the team member doesn't need a mic to speak (but still must have a headset to listen to instructions)?

Correct. No mic means they can't chat. This is only really a slight problem at a couple spots where if you don't tell people you are torn or have the brand (terms used to describe you specifically needing to do something different from the rest of the group) there may be a little bit of chaos as people start yelling "who is torn? we have to hurry no time!"

It's sad that we are in 2016 and a modern console game is making it players resort to something you had to do in the 90's on PC's.

Got a bunch of guys that do the raids regularly and are willing to help.
Gotta know though, what system is he on?

still have to do it for modern PC games

the division, and even WoW are better served using non ingame matchmaking for the hardest content
