Despite all the SF fever... tell me about Atlanta, GA

Actually I spent more time in the Bluff then I care to talk about so NO im NOT a typical frightened suburbanite. Atlanta is not a safe or nice city, its a crap hole.
If you spent time in the Bluff, you're either a cop or an addict. 😛

I've been here 28 yrs. Love it here. Stick to northside of Atlanta and you should be OK.

Like mentioned there are lot of Koreans here. I know you're Korean so that can be either plus or minus for you. Duluth and Suwanee areas have heavy Korean population and businesses. I only go there to eat.

Mountains are 1hr away. GA and Florida beaches are 5-6 hours. Airport is close. Housing and cost of living is cheap. Friendly people. Hot humid weather but that's what A/C is for.

As a general point, if the OP is eventually considering a family; the number one expense/pain in the ass will be education. You either pay for private school (plan on at least a grand per month per kid), or you move somewhere with decent schools. This means paying a shitload (relatively) for a house inside the perimeter, or moving out to the burbs. There basically is no ideal solution to this problem unless you have a lot of cash.

I think Roswell/Crabapple is a good solution to this.

High rated schools and in a location that's close enough to work in the city, Norcross, Alpharetta, or Marietta even. (IMO of course)

I've only been stationed there briefly, but I loved Atlanta. There's so many diverse neighborhoods (Downtown, midtown, Virginia Highlands,) so many great restaurants and entertainment (Whole World Improv.) The MARTA (rail system) runs so regularly and is super convenient.

I would love to live in Atlanta. There are a HUGE amount of homeless & beggers everywhere (which is annoying when you're dining on a patio,) and some parts of the city seem pretty sketchy, but it's freaking Georgia, just carry a gun. That's what I did and I never felt unsafe even in West Atlanta where a homeless man told me "Cracka, you must be crazy cuz you gonna get killed here!"

Heh, I spent a LOT of time down at the QTS data center that's literally right next to the city jail. I'd be working there till all odd hours of the night and it was sure a shit sketchy driving in and out of there sometimes.

But like you said, that's what CCW is for 🙂

:Taps sarcasm meter:

Really? You sure you were in Atlanta?

I think the things I pointed out are specific enough to Atlanta to preclude assumptions of sarcasm.

EDIT: And I left out Atlantic Station, and the Atlanta Underground. Both very cool as well.

Marta sucks

I quite liked it. It seemed to run pretty regularly, 24 hours a day and went most of the places that I wanted to go. It was also surprisingly empty.

Compared to Dallas' DART system, which is irregular, stops at 1am on weekends and is always crowded, it's pretty amazing. Maybe not compared to Chicago or New York, but I thought MARTA had it together pretty well.

I've been to Dallas but never used the DART. My problem with MARTA is that if you're going with another person somewhere it's cheaper to just pay for parking there.

The Atlanta traffic\roads seemed even worse than Houston. In other words, terrible.

That's true but also I like having my car so that's an added bonus

Ah, I hate having a car. Years of commuting in Dallas, plus my current location necessitating a 1 hour drive to reach the nearest chain restaurant have made me hate driving with a passion. I much prefer mass transit and taxis when it's practical.

It's probably because i've never used a taxi before... States side :\
