I just bought a new LCD monitor. I read the instructions and made sure the refresh/resolution is what the manual specified. When I connected the monitor to the PC i get the errors message "OUT OF RANGE." and then my monitor will go on standby mode. Sometimes if I am lucky I do get a display out of the monitor but it is EXTREMELY distorted and you can barely make out anything. Anyone have any clues?

Maybe you should try hooking the PC up to the old monitor, change all the settings back to 640 x 480, etc... and then try to hook up the new monitor and increase from there. I know that windows is supposed to be smart and now have to do this, but I also know that windows doesn't act the way it is supposed to :p

Just a thought.

So the monitor gives an "out of range" frequency even right when you turn it on? I had a REALLY old CRT that couldn't display the range of the regular bootup process really strange you would have that problem on a new monitor. Did you wait and listen to the computer until it gets to where it would boot into Windows to see if it finds that frequency? Otherwise I would check the manual to see what frequencies it actually supports.

Try this:

What I'm guessing is that your old monitor ran at a resolution of say 800x600 and you just bought a 15" LCD with a Native resolution of 1024x768.

I'd try the following:
1) Find out what the native resolution of the LCD is and the max refresh rate and then set the video card to those rates. Most people run their monitors at over 75hz BUT most LCD's will have a max refresh rate of 75hz. I'd change the resolution on the video adapter to match up with the LCD and then try again. By the way, you should do all this with your old monitor plugged in.

2) If you don't have your old monitor then I would recommend that you enter windows in safe-mode by holding the cntrl key during boot-up (assuming Win98). Then change the display adapter to a basic VGA adapter and then reboot and re-install the correct drivers for the video card.

Your problem is probably due to the fact that you didn't set the video card up to work with the LCD BEFORE you disconnected the old monitor and so your card is trying to drive your LCD as if it was a monitor. You'll need to connect the monitor and reset the display so that it will work with the LCD.

Nino, that is assuming he can even see the bootup process (before he even gets into windows).

haha, no, it was. that was the first thing i did actually when i was having problems. i plugged my comp back to my pf790 and set it down to the basic resolutions. tried booting again, and it did not work, messed around a couple times more with resolution/refresh rate and i guess i hit the jackpot. or it could always be that while i was moving the comp back and forth that the wires somehow got fixed. only god knows...but so long as it works, its fine with me =)
