Desperate to qualify for weight loss surgery, some pile on the pounds

WHAT THE ****?

I guess I can kinda see their motive; working the system in order to get insurance coverage. Everyone likes to take the easy way out.

At 202 pounds, Steffany Sears knew she was fat, but not fat enough to qualify for traditional weight-loss surgery.

Desperate for help, the Gold Bar, Wash., woman did what seemed the only logical thing: She gorged herself on chips and cookies, pizza and fried chicken so she’d gain at least eight pounds more.

“I would have eaten myself stupid,” recalled Sears, 34, who was turned down by her insurance company for the $20,000 procedure. “I know friends who would have done that, too.”

In the end, she actually qualified to participate in a clinical trial that led the federal Food and Drug Administration this spring to lower the bar for obesity in people eligible for one form of weight-loss surgery, Allergan’s Lap-Band stomach-shrinking device. Because she had a body mass index, or BMI, of between 30 and 35, the target range of the new rule, she even got the treatment for free, instead of having to take out a second mortgage on her house.

Today, at 5-foot-6, she weighs 143 pounds. "I felt like I'd won the lottery, really, with my life," said Sears, a native of England.

202 - did she actually try losing weight with you know, eating right & exercising?

If she put as much thought and energy into losing weight as she did to pigging out, I'm sure he could have lost weight the hard way.

Probably would have took longer, but it wouldn't be as invasive or dangerous.

An acquaintance of mines is gonna do the lapband in a week. He actually said he can't wait so he can stop hanging around the fat people in his lives. lol

I almost feel like doing it myself, but I am not "fat enough yet."

Sure why not. It's this type of mentality that keeps people on food stamps and other public assistance. "I don't want to have to work toward something so I'll let everyone else pay for it". I freely admit I'm a fatass, but I'd never game the system to get surgery for it.

Yes, we all know it's equally as easy to cut a great many calories as it is to eat more. She was borderline for it and pushed herself over the edge, and we know nothing else of the situation. If she was 180 and put on 30 pounds I could see the desire to rage at her.

I dunno, some people are just lazy or just don't give a fuck. My dad (62) being one of them (oh no he di'nt). My dad is probably around 250 or 260. He has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. His doctor has been trying to get him to lose around 60 pounds. He doesn't give a fuck. He eats what he wants, and doesn't care to exercise to control his diabetes and other health concerns. What the doctor tells him goes in one ear and out the other.

My mom (61) got diagnosed with diabetes last year. Her doctor told her to lose 30 pounds. She started exercising and within about 5 months, she lost 35 pounds. She tried to get my dad to exercise and walk with her, he refused.

My father-in-law (56) had prostate surgery in late July. Afterwards, he decided to go on a health kick because he was unhappy with his weight. He started walking 45 mins a day in the morning before work, using the elliptical machine when he got home from work, and eating very healthy (cutting out a lot of salt, watching his calorie intake). He's lost 40 pounds since then. He wants to lose another 10 pounds and he'll be at his "pre-marriage" weight.

I know that every person and every situation is different, but I truly believe that those that make it a priority to live healthy can shed the pounds.

Side question. Didn't you lose a bunch of weight or am I confusing you with another poster?

Why the **** do you care what I care about?:colbert:

Because you're clogging up the GD forums with this shit. /rage

Wait, can I guess? Girl was uggz, got surgery, now hawt. You're uggz, but there's no surgery out there to fix your sorry ass mug, so you jelly. amirite

202 is nothing. You don't need to have part of your intestine cut out and/or your stomach folded in half to drop 75 lbs. Jesus.

I know someone who had that operation. They are dead now. It's more dangerous than being obese.

False sense of confidence... when you're fat and conscious about it enough to consider surgery, you may have a bit of restraint even though you're still over eating like a pig. Take away a 1-200lbs and all of a sudden, they think they have an all you can eat pass.

I have a similar story as well. When I was working as a computer tech in my hometown back in the late 90s, early 00s, we did work for a funeral home (they bought our computer, we'd service them whenever they had issues). We were pretty friendly with the owner who was a man in his mid 50s, probably 320+ pounds.

He had gotten married in the Spring, and decided to have gastric bypass surgery that summer. Dude had a heart attack and died on the operating table while they were performing the surgery 🙁

I wish I can gain weight, but it's been futile. I'm going on a veggie diet next month to cleanse my system, which will drop my weight some more. I'm making killer guacamole tonight though.

I never understood why we get so angry at individuals for gaming the system on this level but when wallstreet fucks us out of trillions we pat them on the back.
