Thanks for any help in advance and advice will be greatly appreciated.
here's the long story.. It all started out with my brother's friend wanting me to purchase things online for him off eBay and such. He said that he would pay me back and with 15% interest and so I believed him. He would pay me back every now and then, and once even paid me nine $100 bills. So that got my trust and so I beleived him and continued buying things for him. But then the payments stopped and he kept telling me buy things. I was wondering when he would pay me and he reassured me that he would pay me back. Over a period of one year, the debt has accumulated to a total of $3,139. Yes, $3,139. About $2,000 of that is without interest while the other $1000 has the 15% interest added in. I am only 17 and my brother's friend is only 14 years of age. Now, we are both minors so I don't know what I can do. According to his parents, they legally don't have to do anything according to what their lawyer said. That to me also shows that his parents don't care or have something in this matter because I sent $600 to a foreign country and there's almost no way that a 14 year kid would tell me to send $600 off to a foreign country through paypal. In my mind, that $600 transaction could have been the works of his parents and knowing that I hve money and that I'm just a minor. I've kept all the tabs and I've talked to his parents and at first they said they would give their son $10 a week as allowance and that allowance will go to me and once he starts working that money will come to me. Now after some calculation that will take take slightly over 6 years. But they also said that he will work starting when he is 16 which is 2 years from now. In my mind, that 2 years of $10 interest will equal $1040, and that money is strickly coming out of his parents' pockets. But they want to pay $10 each week. Now that to me is kinda fishy because his parents can pay me first and then his son can pay them back the money. There's also another fishy part to the $10 a week...according to his parents, that $10 a week will be given to him and then given to my brother each week. Honestly, how can that work out? first of all the kid might pocket the money and second he might not even see my brother at school.
I then explained to my parents about the whole situation and my mom took control and called up his parents. My parents had the inclination that they wouldn't be paying up. After some thinking on my own, I don't think they had any intention of paying me at all, even the $10 a week because I have not received any of that as of yet. And in 2 weeks, I'll be attending college and there's no way that I can get my money and I don't want to be dealing with this debt that has accumulated over a year while I'm at school.
I still can't believe how dense I could be forking over my hard earned cash to this kid who wanted me to buy things for him off eBay. I was always thinking about the 15% profit that would make from the interest off the things he wanted me to purchased.
I've learned my lesson and that I shouldn't trust people who say that they'll pay you back with interest on top of that. After my mom called, I really believe that his parents have no intention of paying me back and that the $10 a week was just a ruse to get me into thinking that I would be paid back.
So now I'm out $3149 and college is starting up soon and I have yet to build my college computer. I still have what little left of cash left over to buy books on my own and I am in desperate need of advice. My parents have considered talking to the school district and to the police but I don't think that will be of any help. I'm willing to go as far as to using the legal system and hoping that it will help me. I am not well versed in legal matters so I need some advice, any advice, on what to do.
Once again, thanks for any advice regarding this matter.
