International attention will descend on the ASUC Senate meeting tonight as senators consider upholding the passage of a controversial bill urging the student government and the University of California to divest from two companies that have provided war supplies to the Israeli military.

...

Prominent figures including South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, activist Naomi Klein and leftist MIT professor Noam Chomsky have spoken in support of overriding ASUC President Will Smelko's March 24 veto of the bill. Local and national pro-Israel groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)-an influential Washington, D.C. lobby organization-Berkeley Hillel and the Anti-Defamation League have each stated the bill is divisive and unfairly targets Israel.

In a recent letter to the UC Berkeley community, Tutu, who won the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts opposing apartheid in South Africa-said he endorsed the bill and urged senators to uphold the original vote, which he compared to similar efforts at UC Berkeley to divest from South Africa in the 1980s.

He said in an e-mail Tuesday that he had a message for ASUC senators.

"I salute you for wanting to take a moral stand," he said in the e-mail. "(Your predecessors) changed the moral climate in the U.S. and the consequence was the Anti-Apartheid legislation, which helped to dismantle apartheid non-violently. Today is your turn. Will you look back on this day with pride or with shame?"

I knew it all along. People like Desmond always come out of the woodwork eventually. For shame.

A South African not being a fan of Israel has many good reasons for being so. Especially Blacks.

Israel can do no wrong, and if you think otherwise you're an anti-semite!!

Oh give it up with the strawmans.

Desmond Tutu makes outrageous statements, someone accuses him of being a bigot, and of course the anti-Israeli mouthpieces say "ISRAEL CAN DO NO WRONG !!!!11"

These days its more impolite to accuse someone of antisemitism than to actually be antisemitic.

You could say Jews are Nazis and Jews own America, and if I accuse you of antisemitism, I'm the bad one.

IF someone is calling you antisemitic, you probably are one.

I have yet to see any supporter of Israel say "Israel can do no wrong." But I do see a lot Arabists say Israel can do no right.

Desmond Tutu, like Nelson Mandela, are too busy earning the big bucks from British universities and Arab apartheid dictatorships to focus on real human rights.

While Zimbabwean are getting hacked to death by South Africans, and when 50% of the SA population lives below the poverty line, and thousands of white farmers are being killed by black citizens, and over 1,000,000 whites have fled the state since the apartheid fell.....the leaders continue to use Israel as a lightening rod.

The reality is South Africa today is still more racist and apartheid than Israel ever has been.

Dear god the white minority can't even live 100 meters near black citizens. Have you seen the homes?

South Africa should be more concerned about Congo. Palestinians have a higher life expectancy (25 years ore to be exact) and higher standard of living than South Africans.

Oh, and black muslims and christians are fleeing to Israel - not South Africa.

Hmmm...blacks fleeing to apartheid israel? IT CAN'T BE!!!

Hmmm...mystery.

You are confusing anti-zionism with anti-semitism. A deliberate "mistake" Zionists make all the time.

What you've known all along is jack shit. NOTHING in the article says or implies anything about Tutu's opinion of Judaism. Tutu is entitled to his opinion about Israel's military actions.

Israel is NOT without fault, especially in some of their military actions. In fact, some of their choices strike me as arrogance, stupidity and basic assholiness, and they've picked some of the worst times to exhibit such behavior when the opposite would clearly be to their benefit.

What you've spewed as title and a conclusion are irrelevant dogshit.

Does Tutu want a badge for dissing Israel?

Congratulations troll...

South Africa is still extremely racist and xenophobic. Dubious why Tutu is busy obsessing over the Jews and not his own people.

anti-israeli policy != antisemitism

Yeah, if anti-Israel = Jews own America, Jews are Nazi, etc..etc...

Arab world is horrible antisemitic. So if far-leftists are marching lock-step with Arabists, it shouldn't shock you when *gasp* someone cries antisemite.

Don't high-five Nazis and people won't call you Nazi.

Israel is still in denial about the international community taking a united stance to
dismantle and end Apartheid. And now fear, because Israel is the lone Apartheid hold out in the world.

Three facts.

1. There is nothing anti Semitic about Desmomd Tutu.

2. 404 error, Jewish justification for the former South African Aparheid not found.

3. But still, the South African former Apartheid system and the current Israeli Apartheid system are so similar to the point of being indistinguishable . Separate and unequal education systems, laws absolutely favoring one group to the exclusion of the other, and with the full force of law behind making the respective Apartheid system into an institutionalized State policy that is violently enforced.

And now Israel claims it is shocked and amazed when a Nobel peace prize winner can't hep but notice that there is not a dime worth of difference between either either apartheid system. And rather than debate the apartheid 99% similarity on its merits, the standard Israeli response is to claim anti Semitic.

BullShit and hellfire, finally we understand why South African Apartheid fell and its Israeli equivalent still endures, the silly South Africans whites forgot to invent the equivalent myth of South African white anti Semitic to blunt all criticism.

Which finally gets us back to the rapture and the battle of Armageddon myths, as Jesus Christ comes back to lead the forces of good against the forces of evil, but when we talk about GWB and Israel, what happens if ole JC end up siding with the Palestinians?

Alan Dershowitz called Desmond an anti-Semite and a bigot. What more need be said?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are we talking about the same Alan Dershowitz who advocated torturing people to get information while violating every written and unwritten principle of our constitution?

mjrpes, you have some really really strange hero's. What piece of shit human garbage will you cite next as a source authority? For sheer out of left field bullshit, maybe you might want to try Pol Pot next.

Pol Pot didn't believe in God. That kind of takes him off the list.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lets see of I can get my arms around this, now you want to claim someone's so called belief in God as a special class of human delusion, even if there is zero evidence that they behave in a godly manner?

Silly atheist Stalin and Pol Pot, they should have founded a State sponsored religion where murder and bigotry is a sacrament. And then it would have been a religious virtue you would support and endorse.

So we can say all atheists are evil.

Jews as religious are therefore good.

But wait, Muslims as religious are still evil.

Belief in God is the necessary basis for justifying the means to an end.
