Desktop starts as normal, but beeps 5 times

Hello everyone,

After I cleaned my desktop with compressed air I started encountering a problem. The desktop starts up like normal, but beeps 5 times after it started displaying Medion. The desktop is the MEDION Akoya P5342 F I'm pretty sure. It has the MEDION MS-7797 motherboard. In the beginning it happened every time, but now randomly. I've seen the problem in another thread, but there people said it the CPU might have been broken. Since it's a store-bought one and I didn't do anything special (I might have touched the plastic around the cooler a few times when cleaning, but that's it) is there anything else that could be wrong and what could or should I do?

Did you just blow air into the pc or did you open the pc case to blow inside the case?

Does the image below look like your motherboard?

Is that an AMI BIOS? IIRC, they are the only ones that use that many beeps, which means processor failure.

I would make sure the CPU fan connector and the 4-pin 12 volt connector are properly secured.

As far as I know, I haven't unplugged or made loose any cables and the fan is working fine. I'll check it though. Thanks.

Just curious. Why would you try to start a computer with no memory? The only thing that might happen here is the beep could would change, but the board wouldn't boot at all.
 
I start them that way to ensure the board & opcodes are functioning.. when I hear those 3 beeps.. I know board's not dead & proceed from there.

ketchup79 ---- Above is the reason. It helps point on what to diagnose next.
It gives clarity.
 
I generally remove RAM and try to boot, to diagnose whether a board is simply "playing dead", or "is dead". If mobo and CPU bootstrap / BIOS are working OK, then powering it up with no RAM, but CPU installed, should give a "No RAM" beep code. If it doesn't, then the PSU, mobo, or CPU may be completely dead. After that, I would try a known-good PSU, then if that didn't work, I might try the CPU in a known-good board, or try a different CPU in that board (more risky), or simply remove and re-install the CPU (checking the LGA contacts if an Intel board).

Just got back home and tried giving the desktop power without any memory in it. It gave a continuos set/loop of longer beeps. I'm guessing that's a good sign for my motherboard, but something must be wrong with my processor? Any more advice on what to do or should I just go to some computer help in my town if I can't figure it out?

As would be expected. I do have a somewhat belated question about:

"Desktop starts as normal, but beeps 5 times"

So everything is working, you just have the beeps when it starts?

Annoying? yes. Worth paying someone to figure out? Doubt it.

Yes, just the beeps AFAIK.
True, but if the beeping is legit it must mean something right? Anyways, it seems to have stopped occuring so I'm fine for right now. Thanks again to everyone on this forum. I'm new and I'll definitely come back when I need some help. 🙂
 
Wait, so the five beeps, don't stop POST or booting?

In that case, it may be fan low RPM sensors, or overtemp sensors.

One of my (late) friend's rig, would give beeps while gaming. Turns out, it was overheating, he hadn't cleaned the dust out of the heatsink. It was an overclocked E5200, which back then was fairly potent at 3.5Ghz+. (Before we had the G3258 Haswell dual-cores.)
 
Yeah, I am betting on a sensor as well. Just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page. I was getting the vibe that the OPs computer was working, but the other posters did not, so I am glad you cleared that up for everyone Petertlimonade.

Like I said, probably best to just enjoy it while it's not beeping, deal with it when it is, buy a new rig if it drives you nuts.
