Right now i've go thte opportunity to upgrade my desktop to a top end laptop for about #650, but I'm torn. specs of each:
system:...............Laptop..........................Desktop
cpu:..................2x1.83 yonah.................1x2.7dothan(2.9 if i ever figure out what's limiting my fsb)
vid card:.............7800GO.........................x800xl
ram:...................2x512ddr2......................1.5gb ddr1
hard drives:........100gb 5400rpm..............200gb 7200rpm+72.8gb 15krpm
cd drive:............cdrw/dvd.........................cdrw+dvd
screen:..............17" WUXGA.....................15.4" WUXGA
warranty............4 year parts.....................0-3 years, depending
idle noise.............passive/low.......................very low low
load noise............unknown/noticeable..........loud(dammn crappy stock x800xl heatsink)
Note that the $650 upgrade to the laptop is assuming mu keeping the 15.4" WUXGA lcd.
I have four main requirements for my system: low power usage, low noise, high res screen, matching gpu+cpu to drive the high res screen at full res in games.
I was ready to press the order button yesterday, but i starting having second thoughts. to me, $650 is a lot of money. I can certainly afford it, but it's still a lot of dough to me. I really don't think the little 2.5" 5400rpm drive can even touch the 15krpm monster i'm used to, and the cpu is almost a whole ghz slower. While dual core would be nice, none of the apps i use are multithreaded. The 7800go is a significantly faster video card once it's overclocked a bit, but with a cpu at only 2/3 of the speed i'm at now, it should provide roughly the same framerates at native res. There is the possiblity that merom wil work in this laptop when it comes out, but i'm not going to bank on it.
I'd just like to have some input from everyone here and let my mind wander for a day or so before i start weighing the options again.
Waiting for too long isnt really an option because someone REALLY wants to buy my motherboard and has offered $290 for it and the adapter and i don't want to keep them waiting that long to say yes or no.
