Desktop icon wording background

Right Click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, Performance Settings button, Visual Effects tab, Check "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop"
 
XP is the only Windows OS that does it natively. Just use a black / white background and the little box seems to go away 🙂
 
Yeah - I use a solid background and then make the text background the same color and it is invisible.

There is a hack to get transparent icon text in Win2K. It's listed in the link above that HN posted. I've used it myself and it does work.
