As luck would have it, that message only came up the first time or two I started up!
I find it strange that that would happened given that it's brand new, but I suppose it must have been jostled as you said!

I have a copy of Windows that is recognized as genuine by WGA, and I have downloaded many updates for .NET, but I am not getting the 126 or more security updates I am expecting!
They aren't popping up in my system tray, and when I go to Microsoft Update, nothing new shows up either!

I have tried installing various updates and restarted several times, but to no avail — the only updates are junk like the Bing Bar and Bing Desktop!

Does anyone know what the problem could be here?

MS will stop distributing security updates for XP in 29 days, so maybe there are some glitches in the website right now? Or maybe the computer is so fast that it installed the updates while you weren't looking? 😉

You can open a command prompt and run the systeminfo command to get a list of all installed hotfixes. Check to see if the ones you're expecting are to be there are listed.
