Yeah there are some mis-conceptions about the DE. It really doesn't have that much kick. It's gas operated
Glenn1, it's been moved back to the US. It was made by IMI but is branded in the US as Magnum Research and should still be made.
It's also one of the most accurate guns straight out of the box. Granted it's not as nice as a SV or a Wilson, but it gets the job done and turns heads at the range.
...there are places where the Desert Eagle is actually preferred for home defense, namely BEAR COUNTRY I've heard that in places like Alaska some actually prefer it over a rifle...
I've personally put a half dozen .45 acp rounds (military ball ammo) into someone and not had him go down.

whao, i too am shocked at the diversity of knowledge in the forum,
anyway, I have one question that I have to ask, (first off, I have ZeRo knowledge on guns other than some experience in playing with Rogue Spear as I do know what a DE is)
so why shotgun? why is it preferred for home defense? won't a long shotgun be quite un-wieldy and un-manageable? I mean, if the thieve charges at you, you fired, missed, you will have less time to cock it back and reload and fire compare to a pistol.
what if you are ducking under the table and want to fire? you can simply point the gun out and shoot, where as with a shotgun you will have to use both hands to point the gun.
also, many of you said a shotgun is prefferable coz its an "extension of your body" I don't quite understand that too, what does that mean?
and hehee, Jhu, that was one kickass Movie![]()

because when mr. crookie breaks your window at 2 am, you will wakeup very disoriented and won't have pinpoint accuracy...

Point remains that the manufacturing isn't as settled as it should be. If it has been moved back to stateside production, that means it will have been run on three different manufacturing lines in 3 different locations over the last 5 years or so. I'm not sure that's a good recipe for success.

Talking about accuracy in a handgun is somewhat of a fools errand anyway. Police shooting situations have pretty much shown that it wouldn't matter if a handgun groups 1 inch or 5 at 25 yards, as even at typical ranges (7 yards) the hit-miss ratio is pretty abysmal. It's not like comparing hunting rifles where a single MOA difference can be huge. If accuracy was my be-all-end-all metric, i'd never shoot anything but my .270 Winchester.
IME, cops cant intentionally shoot themselves in the foot. Their aim, on average, is that bad. I've bet cops at the range 10+ times, and never lost. I'm a good pistol shot, but I'm not perfect, especially when using someone else's gun, which is how it happens most of the time. All it should take is having 1 decent opponent and a flier on my behalf and thats a loss. But cops are all over the target at 10 yards at the range, whether there is no pressure or just a little ($20).

your 6'2" friend must be a "wimp" then, the story in the Desert Eagle is, that its so massive, it soaks up the recoil of the shell...feels like shooting a 9mm...there are places where the Desert Eagle is actually preferred for home defense, namely BEAR COUNTRY I've heard that in places like Alaska some actually prefer it over a rifle, for a smallish person who might not like the size or recoil, these are good altenatives...if you can pick it up and hold it steady, you can pretty much shoot itBigJohnKC
I have a friend who told me about firing the .50 cal DE on a range. He said he was warned about the recoil, but didn't think it would be as bad as it was. He said he planted his feet as instructed, pressed forward when squeezing the trigger, and the gun recoiled so hard it almost hit him in the face. Now this guy is 6'2" and built like a tank, and if the recoild from a .50 cal DE can almost knock him over, it just might be a little big for you.

edit: and if you somehow miss mr. crookie when he's 15 ft. away with a shotgun, maybe you shouldn't be handling firearms?

I was thinking shelly, if you do get the garand, and you do plan on using it for home defense, might as well get a bayonet attachment for it as well.![]()
