Describe your network setup

Cable modem comes in to the wireless router.

Router goes to the wireless LAN (obviously), the server, my two play machines, and the XBox.

Routes are set up to route xbox traffic to the xbox. HTTP, FTP, POP3, SMTP all go to the server. RDP goes to one of the play machines.

Cable Modem connect to MR814 Netgear wireless
--< uplinked netgear 4 port hub <-- xbox + my computer + server..

while 2 laptops 2 computers in the house connected wirelessly.

something like that... hmm did that make any sense.

Motorola cable modem plugged into a linksys hub. My laptop and my desktop are on the network, but they can't see each other. And the desktop can't get internet access no matter what.

So, I don't really have a network, I just have two computers that are plugged into a hub.

I've got 2 boxes.
Main one has 2 nics.
1 goes to cable modem, 1 goes to my old compaq that my kids use to play games and surf harrypotter.com and barbie.com.
I'm just using Win XP's internet connection sharing.
I thought about getting a hardware router, but don't see much point since everything works great the way it is.

Cable modem -> 4-port switch router -> wireless router with 4-port switch / servers -> computers

Bedroom 1
Alcatel ADSL external modem with 10MB Cat5 out feeding into:
DLINK 701 Personal Router feeding into:
Uplink of a 5 port Linksys 10/100 Switch supporting 2 systems remaining ports are fed into a walljack with wires running to Bedroom 2 and the Livingroom

Bedroom 2
5 port Linksys 10/100 Switch supporting 3 systems

Living Room
5 port 10meg hub supporting 1 system and multiple laptops when I feel like working there.

I live in an apartment so I can't do much more than that. I did drill a HUGE hole through the wall to run my cable between bedrooms. I hope they don't get upset. 😛 I've had this setup for 3 years. I will eventually get wireless, but I don't like working on my laptop at home unless it's docked. No need in running down the batteries unless I have to and cables are always superior for security. 😉

Cable modem -> wireless router with four ports ethernet.
HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, VNC ports open to the server connected via ethernet
Laptop and wife's machine using wireless

I'm using my home network as a test bed for my company, and for my clients. The network uses port forward so the Laptop & workstations can access each other shares, while the workstations/laptop can access server share, but server can't access Workstations/Laptop. I only got wireless for a few days and will down the 3Com switch one the wireless is deem stable by me.

Basically,

I have WirelessISP connected to Dlink704 Router. I have PC's connected to that.
I have an MR814 connected as well, which I'm using only as a switch and a WAP for the laptop
My friend and I bridged our networks using a pair of Dlink900AP's (Not '+').
He shares my internet.

[edit] Prior to wISP, I used my router to share Dialup... it has serial failover or serial primary modes.[/edit]

dsl comes into my dsl modem. That feeds into a network everywhere router which feeds into my WAP, xbox via 150 ft cable and main rig. I also have it split off to a 4-5 port switch which feeds my laptop, win2k server, linux box, etc.

My wifes pc upstairs gets its wireless signal from the wap which is hidden on the 1st floor.

Cable modem, Switch then goes A and B

A goes to Vonage VOIP router

B goes to Netgear WGR614 router/firewall/wap.

1 Win2k3 server (lan Line)
2 PC's and 1 Touchpad all wireless. 🙂

Cable modem (motorlla surfboard) -> linksys 4 port router-> lots of cat 5 cable (100s of feet) -> 4 comps. Mine, Brothers, House/parents, My Server

680 routers - cisco 2600 to 7500
2800 switches - cisco 3500 to 6500

3000 routes spanning the globe with a little bit of BGP thrown in at the edges.

Sweet, where's that hotspot so I can get in on the fun?

Adelphia -> cable modem -> MS Wireless router -> 3 wired computers -> 2 wireless laptops.

All works fantstically well except for Adelphia.

I'm working on connecting to my neighbor who's (just recently) got DSL now. Plan to have manual failover to his gateway if/when our wISP goes down. I'd like to use a Nexland Pro 800 and loadbalance the WAN.... but since Symantec bought them out the price has only gone up.

Maybe I'll get fancy and build a linux machine to do that... not yet though.

Anyone else know of a cheap(er) appliance that loadbalances WAN, and/or supports failover?
