Yet just two years ago, they endorsed the Republican candidate for governor. Throughout the last few decades, they've endorsed candidates on both sides.

Damn those pesky facts blowing holes in your ignorance. :'(

When your "fact" is really only ASSumption, your objectivity is quite relevant.

I wondered when bow would trot in here and try to challenge the fact that the Register is left leaning.
The endorsement of Branstad over the big lug doesn't mean that the paper isn't a liberal paper. The makeup and position of their staff is well documented and to suggest they aren't liberal despite that history tells us that some are either just blind or willfully ignorant about the paper. Again, even liberal readers of the Register have acknowledged such a slant... sheesh.

So true and its because not doing so would make them look like complete fucking morons. And we both know the liberals in Des Moines are way to prude to have that kind of label floating around. ;)

You can tell from the responses of the article that they don't want to actually believe their liberal paper picked the conservative.

Im soooooooo glad someone started this thread.

I read the DM Register.
I KNOW machinist that work at the DM Register.
And so HERE are the FACTS...!!!!!!
As they would say on Dragnet, just the facts ma'am.

THE FACTS:
#1. Gannett owns the DM register.
#2. Gannett has been "actively" union busting at the DM register in the past few years.
#3. Every worker, except union, at the DM register are now forced to take numerous 1 week work furloughs during every quarter.
#4. Work Furlough are for 1 week, unpaid, and are mandatory.
#5. The average take home pay for machinist at the DM Register, compared W2 statements, was less in 2011 than in 2010. Workers income actually declined.
#6. Lifetime pensions plans have been replaced with 401K plans.
#7. The 401K is limited and subject to the stock market performance.
#8. Gannett has engaged an all out frontal assault on DM Register workers.
#9. The DM Register endorses the republican, Mitt Romney.

And fact #10. Is anyone really that surprised with this endorsement?

Gannett is a republican right wing, anti union, union busting, anti worker rights organization that just happens to own the DM Register.

And THOSE are the facts!

Not only the facts, but in the past furloughed workers could apply for state unemployment benefits for to help cover those short non income months and weeks.
NO MORE!
The republican iOwa governor, working hand in hand with the state unemployment department put an end to THAT.
No longer can any furloughed employee qualify for state unemployment benefits.

PS. While the DM Register endorses Mitt Romney, fact # 11 the DM Register employees certainly DO NOT !!!!!!
They have seen their salaries diminished, benefits revoked, overtime eliminated, pensions turned into 401K plans, and Dm Register families devastated over the past few years under Gannett ownership.

Imagine, a middle class life for millions of American workers under a republican controlled presidency under Mitt Romney.
Just imagine!
And good luck with that.......

PSS... I got got to add... Gannett's CEO had his bonus raised every year since.

Hint: Regardless of his reason for doing so, Powell previously endorsed obummer already in 2008, so him endorsing him again is neither surprising nor meaningful. When a leftist paper that hasn't endorsed a GOP candidate for 40 years does so instead of endorsing the current leftist, that's telling.

If Fox News endorses obummer, THAT would be meaningful and telling.

Agreeded. Wasn't he in the Bush cabnet, and quit . The only problem I see here is. I wish he had a chance to be on Obummers staff . Just so he could know the real obummer. Powell I have always had a great deal of respect for , I always thought he would be a good president.

lol, so the fact that the business structure is trying to survive and control costs suddenly means the paper doesn't have a leftist slant? Really? Are you really that obtuse and devoid of logic?

He is no different than half the liberals in the comment section of the article. They are trying to find a way to rationale the paper's decision. Something that would reduce the impact of it and make them feel all warm and fuzzy.

If you aren't from Iowa or don't live her I can't see why any of this matters to you. Like I have said, already a few times, this doesn't change a thing nationally. That should be enough comfort for most of the liberals out there, but I guess it isn't.

In your world, I'm sure, anybody more moderate than Limbaugh "leans left". From you, that description just means they aren't fringe-whacks.

Obtuse? As if the parent corp can't exercise a great deal of influence over the editorial position of one of their newspapers. That's obvious in the leaps of faith & logical fallacies used to achieve this endorsement of Romney. How much freedom of expression do you expect from people who are economic hostages, anyway?

Yes.

In case you hadn't noticed, the newspaper industry is in serious trouble. The fact that some people working at newspapers are seeing wages decline is to be expected. It's happening everywhere, and not all of those papers are endorsing Romney.

Uh... do you know anything about the register? Have you read it? Was it your local paper for 10+ years? Do you have any idea who they employ?
Seriously, this isn't about me - it's about the paper and it's clear leftist bias that all but the most seriously blind can see. Maybe not as leftist as the NYT but it's history is quite clear.
