Depressed about the job market

I am a third year law student, in the top of my class, Law Review (for of you who went to law school), but I still don't have a job. I have heard no so many times that I am thinking about going into something else. To add fustruation on top of it, the Houston Chronicle printed this article today: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/chronicle/3790540.html
This is totally unrealistice, and only a few get jobs that pay this much. To those in the legal field, WTF is wrong with the job market? (Besides the fact that there are too many lawyers).

Work for the goverment. You get to meet all the judges and other lawyers and set your name. After that then move to private practice or office and there ya go...

Yes, I clerked at two big firms last summer, but didn't get a job offer. And also worked at the clinic at our school.

Try markets outside your area. I wouldn't be too concerned if I were you, it's just not your time yet.

Nothing. That is why it is so frustrating/confusing why I don't have a job. I did well at my summer clerkships, and got good feed back from employers, they just didn't hire everyone they took on. I would love to have an explanation myself, but I don't have one.

That's pretty pathetic that you can't find a job with a graduate degree in a 4.7% unemployment economy.

times are tough for new law grads. that is, unless you happen to be in a top 1st tier school or know somebody who can get you a position. i graduated last may from uf & passed the bar in sept but was unemployed until december, when i got a contract position at a small commercial litigation firm. i've been at the same position since but the pay is really bad (lower than most paralegals), although i'm getting some good experience. right now i'm applying at some state agencies and even doc review jobs.

it kind of pisses me off how the aba does nothing to curb the influx of new grads and non-accredited schools around the country. if i had known it would be this bad i def. would have stayed with my bio major in college and went into pharmacy or dentistry

Only if the AMA was like the ABA...healthcare costs would come down.

It is a tough job market. Stick it out and keep on applying to places.

You have good experience (clerked at 2 places) and have good academics. Probably other outside interest also so keep on applying and you should land a job. Yes it sucks getting turned down but you are an employable person

Now, if you were a network engineer, I just might want to hire you. But since you're not...

It's actually the norm to have a job lined up before you graduate. This helps you get the loans you need to cover your cost for studying for the bar and taking the exam.

I am interested in doing litigation or international arbitration, but I have been applying for all kinds of legal jobs. I'm fluent in Spanish and would like to do a job where I can apply those skills, but again, I am not picky anymore. I willing to try about any legal job.

Right, I had the same type of setup.

Well you're going to have to start applying all over the nation and be willing to move your entire life at the drop of a hat. Obviously staying local isn't working out for you right now, so you need to explore other options.

There are a couple of lawyers on this board.

DonVito for one. DevilsAdvocate for another

The US government (civilian & military) can be good careers.

The two referenced people may have some advice.
