Looks like SP2 uses DEP more liberally than previously and this was causing me to get an error in my windows explorer shutting it down every few minutes. At first I thought my HD was going bad or something. Got online and got direction on how to turn it off (specific programs only) and looks like the problem is gone. What is scary though is what may be causing it I have no idea while others dont have to turn it off but it is cropping up now as a problem for people as you can see reading around online. I just hope mine wasnt acting up because I have been comprimised somehow. Clueless about this DEP stuff. New to me. Any comments?

I think intel does not support DEP. I'm having no problems on my XP2500+ System w/ SP2 and all features enabled.

I did see a few problems intalling SP2 on other PC's but after it installed no DEP problems. You can disable it w/ a boot.ini switch, it's probably not a big risk to do that if it's causing problems. I'd suspect that you have spyware/adware installed which is causing the issue though... just a hunch.

This is a good explanation of DEP technology and how it's used in SP2. Most compatibility problems are due to poorly written or misbehaving drivers or applications.

Luthien, what do you have for firewalls and antivirus software? Any reason to think you might've been compromised, any major risk factors? Are there other computers networked to yours? What OS do you run (Pro or Home)?

Hardware file wall and Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus 2004. Virus scans turn up empty. Turning off DEP for windows explorer seems to have worked btw because no more DEP error windows popped up in the last 24 hours or so since. I was getting the error at least every 30 minutes but it was irregular.
