That's probably what I had too. The oral surgeon gave me the choice of what he called "twilight zone" or full anesthesia. I'd had so many fillings at that point I figured I could handle it.

It was actually an interesting experience. I remember being right at the edge of sleep, dopey as all hell, and watching all these hands reaching into my mouth, I couldn't quite make out what they were saying to each other but at one point I realized they were breaking up one of the teeth by pounding on it with some kind of tool and it made a sound like a steel bar hitting a rock. I actually remember thinking "wow, I'd be pretty freaked out by that if I wasn't so drugged up".

I think for wisdom teeth - not knowing what the hell they actually have to do (like breaking up bone), I'd rather be out.

Hearing is muted with the benzos and gas? I've only had gas and it made be relaxed but pain hit like crazy at some points for cavities. If I can get into this "twilight zone" I think that'd be cool, cuz drugs are fun kids, and if the pain is not existent and the drill's whine (and the skull-rattling vibrations, and whatnot) is like, far removed in the background (if present at all), I'm cool with that.

Breaking up bones with impacts ... fuck that. Put me out.

I'll be finding out options I guess - I am required to visit a dentist, and depending on his medical opinion, might have no option to get some work done ASAP - like... immediately. First, finding a dentist who even has these options, and is also in network if possible.
This whole dental insurance thing, and finding a highly-touted dentist, has me feeling like a drill is already in my head.

What's the downside to getting knocked out? You probably won't die.
Is there a cost difference?

It's not so much that it mutes your hearing, you're just so doped up that you can't understand it.

As for the impacts, I know it doesn't seem like it, but it was kind of cool. I heard a thump-thump-thump-thump and thought "WTF is going on?" Then I saw how his hand was moving toward and away from my mouth rapidly and I put two and two together.

I believe it's more expensive. Also, it takes a lot longer to recover. When I had my wisdom teeth out I was back at work the same day (not everyone has it so easy though, some people have a hard time with it, I was just lucky)

I don't know what I had, but I do know they gave me:

1. 1 Pill of halcion to take before.
2. An injection in my wrist
3. Nasal mask with some gas, right after they put the mask on I was out.

It was very easy, you wake up and they are about done.

come again?
I went for dentures and had 22 teeth to be pulled.
I may have misunderstood but I was under the impression impacted meant infected, I think you were correct in thinking it means pressure and misalignment of the tooth. I had cavities cause pain from infection and the dentist called them impacted this is why I was thinking infection.
Normally to treat this they will give antibiotics and send you home till the infection is beat as infected bone and teeth don't respond well to novacaine. I didn't have this option so those 4 hurt. I traveled to SC from CT in order to save a few thousand.

I think that they don't really define it as "impacted" unless it WON'T properly breach the gums, eg, it's growing in sideways. But I'm no dentist.

Two of mine were coming in wrong, but they took 'em all anyway. And yes, none of them had breached the gums yet.

I had one growing in properly, and 3 growing in sideways. I actually waited awhile to have mine taken out such that they were pushing on all my other teeth fairly bad. Squishing them all together. One of them was even starting to poke out above the gumline, sideways.

Had a good dental surgeon take those babies out while I was unconscious. :)
