Dentist wants to extract my wisdom tooth less than 2 days before I go on vacation.

Had my wisdom tooth crack apart on me and now I need to get it removed. It does not hurt at all and I have it filled with tooth filler. I've already been referred to the Oral Surgeon, but the problem is that he wants to do it this Wednesday, and we leave on Friday.

The tooth is not impacted, according to them, by my description over the phone, though they have never seen it.

On the one hand, if i have the surgery it could be complicated by dry socket or something while I am in a foreign country in the Caribbean. On the other hand, if I don't get it done, I risk tooth ache or infection.

Hey, I was just in the Caribbean a couple of weeks ago... I want to go back!

🙂

My suggestion: Wait until after the trip's over.

I'd wait till I get back, but then I think it really depends on the dentist.

I had a procedure that took me 10 days to get over (back to regular foods) when my brother (same situation) recovers in 2 days because he went to his specialist while I went to wherever my mom took me.

tell them its hurting and your not going to get it pulled until you get back because the pain would be much worse...try and get them to give you some pills in case it does start to hurt while you are away.

I wouldn't do it. I had FOUR taken out on a Friday morning once and was leaving that afternoon for a vacation. The pain from the surgery didn't ruin my trip but being doped up the whole time kind of put a damper on things. I didn't mind the pill buzz back in those days but in hindsight, I wish I had postponed the surgery so I wasn't so loopy. And forget thinking you'll get by without taking the painkillers if you're having wisdom teeth cut out. Hurts like hell.

I would go for it depending on the dentist. You dont want to be on vacation and have any troubles. I had a wisdom tooth removed and I was fine the next day. Just a few lortabs to get through the critical hours. Then you will be fine.

I agree with this. Your mouth is going to heal very quickly. Anyone who has had their wisdom teeth out will tell you how quickly the mouth heals. Mind you, on Wednesday and Thursday you may be eating a lot of jello, pudding, and milkshakes. By Friday, you should be back to normal.

I had two wisdom teeth pulled a few days before I went on vacation to Cozumel. I didn't really have any problems. I think the seawater I got in my mouth while snorkling actually helped the healing process.

Meh...

I had 8 teeth out (4 Wisdom, and the 4 next to them) and I was fine in two days... and that's with 8...

I wouldnt take the chance on being on vacation and getting a killer tooth-ache... Get that thing ripped out...

When I had my (impacted) wisdom teeth cut out (in pieces) a few years ago, I was on the couch for a week thanks to the vicoprofen.

EDIT: Text

No way in hell would I get it extracted until after the vacation. The odds of infection could be drastically reduced if you rinse and brush after every meal. Bring some hydroxide type mouth wash and you should be good.

I'm assuming a 1 week vacation right?

I doubt that you need it immediately pulled unless it was ALREADY painful and infected.

Saltwater would really help kill bacteria...

Geez what a bunch of pussies. I had all of mine pulled at the same time too, and was given ONE Motrin by the dentist(navy dentist). I never felt any pain or discomfort over the next several days.

it really depends on the person with wisdom teeth, me I was off the pain pills after the first day and was fine, my brother was in pain for a week

When I had my wisdom teeth taken out I was on the pain meds for that day and then I was fine. I had them out on a friday and went out to play paintball the next day. It just depends on how the teeth are conneted and how easy they pop out.

That was my experience and 2 were impacted.

I'm sure you'll be fine since its not impacted. Basically, if you can see the tooth its not impacted and the whole procedure will take about 15 minutes...most of the time spent waiting for the local anethesia to kick in. I doubt you'll have any pain after.

I too suggest not doing it right before vacation. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, it was not a pleasant experience, and the next week or so were not much better. I had a slight reaction to the meds, so that didn't help at all. Had trouble eating for the next week, had to be very careful about it. Maybe it goes better for some people, but it didn't for me. 🙁
