Nor should it be,.. especially if you choose not to take care of your mouth and want someone else to fix/patch up whatever mess you've created - provided again you got to the point you are at because of neglect.
 
The father of a friend of mine is Filipino and had retired to the Philippines. The friend needed a lot of dental work, so had it all done in Manila (by a dentist who had gone to dental school in the US) while he was there visiting his father. It would have easily cost several thousand dollars in the US, but cost him just a couple hundred there.

To get some idea of how far a dollar goes in a country like that: His Dad had been a college professor at Georgetown and had married an American. They were divorced, so after he retired he moved back to the Philippines. He built a 4000 square foot home on the beach and has a full-time housekeeper, a gardener and a driver.
 
My dad told me that growing up the dentist in his town charged $5 to drill/fill a tooth and $3 to pull one. He told me there were a lot of poor people that ate applesauce in that town.

A professor makes a lot more money than many think, he could have been making $250k and had a pension.
 
Actually dental work is not cheap anywhere!
In some places it is less expensive that other places!

I get most of my dental work don in Poland!
My dentist is German and he has offices in Warsaw and Tarnow!

I had 4 teeth that were gone could not be saved. I went to Poland and had the teeth pulled and a partial plate made and the total cost was at the time 2,000 zloty or approx. a litle over $600 American at the time which was 2011.

After I had the work done the plate was giving me problems so I made an appointment with the dentist the same night I was leaving to return to USA and he did some adjusting and checked my other teeth and I was on my way. All of this took place after 8:00 PM.....just amazing the hours they keep!

My wife had some very extensive dental surgery done to replace a set of lower dentures and again it was remarkably cheap but the quality was very good!

Now before we discuss quality let me say there is a Polish dentist that my wife and I like to see in San Jose, California who actually recommended we get the work done in Poland!
Yet, after seeing the work on my wife`s dentures...she said it was fgod dental work and properly done. Yet the technique and way the dentures were done was the way it would have been done approx. 10-15 years ago in the States!

So is dentistry good in foreign countries--basically YES!

But again -- it helps to have local recommendations or as was my case family and friends recommended good dentists!!

Around these parts, and most of the southern border US states, folks will cross into Mexico for dental work because it is only 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of here in the States. In the States, a root canal can typically run $1000-$1200 while in Mexico it is about $400.

Prescription meds too. They cost about 10% in Mexico of what they cost in the states. It's the exact same stuff, too. Same packaging and everything. They just put spanish language instruction stickers on the packages, covering up the english instructions.

Same in Thailand. While I was in Bangkok I had root canal. $400 amazingly cheap. That was with the crown.

I have a friend who had the same procedure done in PA and it cost him nearly $1,100

If they are not impacted, it shouldn't be bad.

I had all four of mine out at one time. I had 3 wisdom teeth "grow back", they were micro-donts above my other wisdom teeth.

One of mine had my one and only cavity due to a very deep crevice that a toothbrush bristle couldn't get into and they were starting to crowd my teeth so I had them all pulled.

I had the procedure done around 7am, I was at work around 9am. I was very bloody, but I ate that day since at the time I was a major weight lifter and into sports 3-4x a week.

It was against my dentist's wishes for both working and eating.

I didn't need to take my pain killers even.

That said, the novacaine did not take effect fully at the start of my procedure. The dentist saw me tearing up a bit and wincing at times. He stopped and asked (as he poked me with a probe) can you feel that, I said yes.

He asked why I didn't say anything and since I didn't ever have dental work before (or since except cleanings) I figured pulling a tooth out should hurt a little at least.
 
esthetic dental work is even more expensive. I got braces as an adult (when I was 20) and the complete process (a little more involved than just putting braces on) ended up costing me just under 10k. For a college student dropping 10k at one time for teeth was steep it was SO worth it.
 
dentists have become so accustomed to fleecing insurance companies they are now fleecing all regardless of insurance status.
