Democrats To Mandate Food Labels ON FRONT Of Packaging

OK, I don't get it. They force the manufacturer to put the nutritions info on the front of a product. What if the manufacturer then puts their product label in the back of the package, then isn't everything back to the same situation we have right now?

Exactly.

Looks like they're going the long way around to require grocery stores to stock product on shelfs backwards. Idiots.

The hilarity of this thread has nothing to do with the actual op. I find it hilarious that party liners will be party liners. Why does it seem like every lefty thinks this is a great new idea while every righty thinks it's a piss poor idea. The ease with which they pull the strings is.. Amazing?

And yeah I still think mandating a move is dumb but meh it doesn't hurt anything. Just additional unnecessary costs on our corporations.
I can think of a couple things it hurts. First is marketing - if your product is small, there's no room for marketing on the front. That pretty much makes the back the front, except for the supersize packages. Want to sell cookies? Are you going to package them in a twelve-pack, or in a thirty-six pack with enough room for a picture and a smiling elf?

Second, for people who want to know the nutritional information but who are literally too trifling to pick up the package, turn it over, and read the back, printing the nutritional information on the front probably removes a significant portion of their daily exercise.

why would a grocery store bother to do that? 😕

the store manager has no vested interest in whether you buy cereal X versus Y, you're still buying cereal

That's actually a good idea. More readily available information is a GOOD thing not a bad thing.

"More readily available information"?

Bwuhahaha. It's already on the dang package.

I do the grocery shopping in my family. The number 1 important thing is to get the right product. Puting this stuff on the front is just gonna make the label too busy. It's annoying when you get home and find that you've picked up the wrong thing, like tuna in oil instead of water. (People don't always put the product back in the exact right place after looking at it.)

If there's a problem with any nutritional info it's that often the print/font size is too small to be easily read.

C'mon, it's not like the info is now somehow 'hidden'. There's a old expression these people could learn from "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make 'em drink'.

This will change nothing but make everybody retool for new packaging (waste of money) and possibly cause some confusion when buying.

I buy fresh veggies, fruit and meat anyway. Those won't be affected so I won't be bothered with this drivel.

Currently, the nutritional info is on the back. If they make them put it on the front it'll look like the product is shelved backwards.

Actually, the margins on different cereals could be different. So if the store makes .10 on one cereal, and .30 on another cereal, they do have a vested interest.

Most boxed foods have the nutrition info on the side.

End of the universe, nonetheless.

Remember when the Government mandated that matchbooks have the striker on the back?

That alone killed over 3,275 kittens (and still counting).

Honestly, before package labeling was mandated to the extent it is now, I'm quite sure there would have been plenty of the same naysayers saying, "Oh no! I need government to save me from myself."

The reality is that people don't. You can sit there on your soapbox and call everyone lazy or you can acknowledge that we have a long-standing problem with how food is presented in the marketplace and come up with solutions.

What I don't think you're understand is marketing. People don't investigate to find something out. They look, very casually, and generally make a quick determination based on some largely superficial data. Having the label on the front of the box will absolutely make a difference in how consumers make purchases.

Finally, some people think that our food supply is of equal importance to much else. I think this is a bit silly, too, but solutions to deal with the epidemic of poor eating habits is a tremendous priority for us all.

I'm all for requiring manufacturers of every product to be required to disclose the contents of their product. Educated consumers are a necessity for a truly free market.

However you're wrong. Putting labels on the front will do nothing to change how people shop. The information is already there for those who care, changing the location won't magically make more people care about what they eat.

what's the harm in allowing people to see nutritional information while walking down the aisle without making them stop, pick up the box, and turn it around?

Is this all going be in a 72 point font? Don't be so fucking dense. You're not going to read the nutrition facts while walking, you're still going to need to pick the box up to read it. You're just saving the step of turning the box over.

This just concretes the idea that Democrats are in fact lazy.

i find it funny that people think this is really going to change how people eat.

Its not like someone is going to see the label on the front of that box of twinkies and say " whoa! i didn't know these had 4000 calories per serving! i better put them back and get a apple for the kids". nope all they are going to do is "wtf did they change the box again? are these ho ho's? no ok good they are twinkies" and throw them in the cart.

now im not against twinkles (so twinkle manufacture don't send your secret ninja's after me!) but good god i seen a women buy 3 box's while at target last week! WTF happened to moderation?

what's the harm in relocating the information from the side to the front of the packaging?

The fact that I will no longer be able to see what I'm buying until I turn the product over. Have you ever been to a grocery store? Do you realize how small a lot of the packages are?

I think that's exactly what will happen. A lot of people live in ignorance. They are too apathetic to turn the box around and read the label. This way they'll be forced to read the label, assuming they can read. If 10% of them say "whoa, maybe I shouldn't give my kids this", then it's worth it.

Why the love for the corporations?

If they really wanted people to eat healthy they'd mandate that all doors, windows and table tops be mirrored.

People that are concerned about what they eat will take the time to check the back of the package. However, and this definitely a selfish reason, I'd prefer not to have to do that so I'm for this.

You believe the people don't read the label because it is on the side? That, placing the label on the front will somehow force them to read this information. It is almost like you cannot comprehend that most people don't care.

I think the location of the label is something really stupid to argue about. But, at the same time, I fear that regulations like this come from a belief that the people of this nation are not capable of making decisions for themselves, and it is the governments job to regulate, regulate, regulate, until people finally make the decisions the politicians think they should make.

How does in any way force people to read the label?

It doesn't, it's just clutter in the way of the info we seek.

I don't go to the store to shop for 'calories'.

E.g., I go to the grocery store looking for pasta. OK, I see pasta.

Then I narrow down to the shape I want. Is it fettuccini or rotelle?

When I get the shape I want, I'm then looking for the next criteria, is it semolina, whole wheat, spinich etc.

Only after drilling down through those criteria would I even remotely be interested in comparing nutritional value between choices.

To start with nutrition is back asswards.

Little packages have already been mentioned, how much info can you really jam onto the front? Will the font be so small as to be useless?

WTH is the 'front' of a round object?

Do canned goods already meet this requirement, but it's just that stores stock them backwards so the 'front' with the nutritional info is facing backwards?

What's the 'front' of a cube etc?

I understand legislating that such info be displayed, but jeebus micro-managing the placement is too dang nanny-ish for me. "Since you're too lazy to turn the package over and read the back, we're just gonna have to make it be on the front".

How do they know this anyway? Have they done studies confirming that people interested in this nutritional info are that lazy?

Or maybe studies actually confirming that placing it on the front makes people somehow magically more aware and interested?

WTH did this idea come from?

I'm less concerned about the source of this dictation and more concerned that we're such a communist nation as to actually follow through with this shit.
What you should be more concerned about is being such a fucking little Nancy that this would make you say something stupid like this is a Communist Nation. I'm sure any emigrant from that late Soviet Union or one of their former satellites would laugh in your face if you'd considered this similar to their plight. Get a clue!
