What happens if the tax hikes are included in the 2008 Budget
Filed under: Your Democracy, Federal Budget ? Press Office

This week, the House will begin debating the FY2008 budget. Unfortunately, some very large tax increases may be included by the Democratic leadership. Here are some good figures from the Budget Committee of the taxes which may be increased if the budget passes in its current form:

Specific Tax Hikes

* Raising the 10% Tax Rate Bracket to 15%- More than 5 million individuals and families who previously owed no taxes would become subject to the individual income tax in 2011 if the 10% tax rate bracket is raised to 15%.
* Eliminating Marriage Penalty Relief- 23 million taxpayers would see their taxes increase, on average, by $466 in 2011.
* Cutting the Child Tax Credit in Half- 31 million taxpayers would see their taxes increase, on average, by $859 in 2011.

Sample of Taxpayer Fallout

* Elderly Couple with $40,000 in income- their tax bill would rise by 156% in 2011 ? from $583 to $1,489.
* Family of Four with $60,000 in earnings- their income tax bill would rise from $3,030 to $4,893 in 2011 ? that?s an increase of more than $1,850, or 61%.
* Single Parent with Two Children and $30,000 in earnings- this single parent would see her tax benefits decline 67% in 2011. With tax relief, this single parent qualifies to get back $2,414. With the Democrats? tax hike, this single parent would only get back $799.

EVERY Working American Would be Affected by Democrats? Tax Hike

* 115 million taxpayers would see their taxes increase, on average, by $1,795 in 2011.
* 83 million women would see their taxes rise, on average, by $2,068.
* 48 million married couples would incur average tax increases of $2,899.
* Taxes would increase, on average, by $2,181 for 42 million families with children.
* 12 million single women with children would see their taxes increase, on average, by $1,082.
* 17 million elderly individuals would incur average tax increases of $2,270.
* Taxes would rise, on average, by $3,960 for 26 million small business owners.
* Over 5 million taxpayers who previously owed no taxes would become subject to the individual income tax as a consequence of the sunset.

Easier to raise taxes than to eliminate pork and tighten the federal belt.

True, but it's even easier and more harmful to do what President Bush and his Republican-led Congress did, and increase pork WITHOUT increasing taxes.

Operative word: "may." Doesn't sound like they have been added. Or at least, no specific information is available. Which means it's pure speculation. [Or "FUD" depending on how you look at it.]

Well, we have to find some way to pay the TRILLION dollars Bush wasted in Iraq. Amazing how its always the party who just recently gained power gets screwed over trying to deal with all the sh|t the previous leaders got the country in.

Basic scaremongering. If Dems raise taxes, it'll be on the top incomes, rather than what the article suggests... And I doubt they'd even try before taking the Whitehouse in 2008.

But rave on, anti-tax fanatics, rave on...

Have you seen what social services costs this country, and looked at how much MORe it would cost if the Democrats egt all their fancy plans in place?

Pot meet kettle.

Good point in bold above.

These tax increases by the democrats from 2008 to 2011 or whatever it is will be the largest tax increases ever.

Even with spending freezes and cuts, they'll have to be, simply to correct for the years of Repub flim-flammery... Pay now or pay later- Repubs chose pay later, with interest...

Whats your point?
I'm trying to determine if Specop 007's statement is true.

I don't see the costs for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq tho.

If I remember correctly, that is not included in the federal budget, its considered emergency spending. I could be wrong though, its just what I heard (I think).

See this is exactly the problem with politics in America, you make a comment against one party and suddenly everyone assumes you must be a mindless drone for the other one. I personally loathe the democrats plans for more social services more than any other political platform of either party today, as much as I dislike Bush, if it was between him and someone supporting a drastic increase in social programs (read: Hillary Clinton) I would support him. As point of fact in my life I have voted exactly evenly in terms of parties, I have voted once for a republican (Congressman Zach Wamp) and once for a democrat (John Kerry in losing bid for presidency). The fact that democrats might want to spend more money doesn't change the fact that Bush HAS spent more money than was raised by taxes during his years in office and someone will have to pay for it.

Nah, the budget will be balanced by 2009 if Bush's budgets were allowed to continue. Instead Democrats are going to further increase spending and increase taxes to pay for it.

I don't get this railing against taxes. I can certainly understand not wanting to PAY a lot, but when the government SPENDS a lot, logic would suggest someone is going to have to pay for it. Just because the Republicans believe in something for nothing does not make it factual reality. If you want huge government spending, you probably will have to pay for it sooner or later. It seems like a far smarter thing to do would be to fight against wasteful SPENDING. Given our budget right now, the Democrats are just being realistic with taxes. If you want taxes to go down, you need less spending, not just less taxes.

I guess it is getting harder to steal money from the SSAN fund and not pay it back. We dont have to raise taxes we just have to freeze budget increases. Starting in the Clinton Era there was an artificial reduction in spending created by misleading accounting practices and by reducing the size of the military. I am not sure when it started, but one way to make the budget shrink is by removing some items off the budget and then moved to contracts and whatever. This makes the budget appear to be less, but it is just more smoke and mirrors.

I dont see how what the Democrats would call "The Poor" can be helped by a tax increase. I dont see anything that the Democrats might do can help the Poor or the lower middle class. Energy Costs in the USA are all running amuck. Fixing this energy crisis can do the most good for the majority of the Americans Paying the Bills. When I look at the energy crisis, I see the Energy companies holding America hostage. This all started with a plan to lower energy prices by opening it up to the free market and promoting competition. It all looks like a planned collusion to artificially raise energy prices. What will happen if energy prices raise too high, then Solar Energy will be cheaper in the long run and smart peoplel with money to invest will opt out of the traditional electric company.

There is only so much strain that the average American can deal with. I predict that people will be going bankrupt and buying less houses if we can not control this energy crisis. It will be the end of the American Way, and a revolt against large corporations. Corporations that make lots of money by firing American and moving overseas can look forward to a lot of abuse by their customers. If I have two bills and I have an american calling me and a foreigner calling me, then I am more prone to pay the American. I am insulted by some idiot from India asking me for money. I am equally less polite to spanish speaking people.

If you cant speak english, you cant have my money or respect. Anyone can come from anywhere and legally immigrate to the USA. Most groups learn to speak english and learn to get along with the other groups that live here. In the USA we enjoy each other's differences because we like variety and we like cultural differences. We embrace different cultures as long as they are peaceful and respect our laws. Viloate our laws and you will lose our respect, and earn our hatred. Americans when they get mad can get really violent; Just ask Sadam!

Exactly, thats what most conservatives want, and why many of us feel betrayed by the Republican party.

I'd love to have the budget cut in half and lower taxes.

I don't hear you thanking your mangod Bush for creating this tax burden in the first place.

Thanks for admitting how your kind don't pay your fair share and it's all about just you and your fellow rich cheapskates.

Yes, we are part of a "collective", it's called being American citizens.
