Democrats force Senate into unusual closed session

This is how you begin to bring down a president.

It's about time the Democrats demanded a thorough investigation into Bush's lies regarding Iraq and the conspiracy within his adminstration to wage naked aggression based on what they knew to be intentionally skewed intelligence and patently false statements over a period of months by several senior members of the Bush adminstration all the way up to the president and vice-president.

Why are the Republicans stonewalling an investigation? What are they hiding?

I thing we all know the answer to that question. ;).

Democrats force Senate into unusual closed session

Majority leader decries move as a publicity stunt

Tuesday, November 1, 2005; Posted: 5:06 p.m. EST (22:06 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats forced the Republican-controlled Senate into an unusual closed session Tuesday, questioning intelligence that led to the Iraq war and deriding a lack of congressional inquiry.

"I demand on behalf of the American people that we understand why these investigations aren't being conducted," Democratic leader Harry Reid said.

Taken by surprise, Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.

"The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership," said Majority Leader Bill Frist. "They have no convictions, they have no principles, they have no ideas," the Republican leader said.

Reid demanded the Senate go into closed session. The public was ordered out of the chamber, the lights were dimmed, and the doors were closed. No vote is required in such circumstances.
Prewar intelligence

Reid's move shone a spotlight on the continuing controversy over intelligence that President Bush cited in the run-up to the war in Iraq.

Despite prewar claims, no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq, and some Democrats have accused the administration of manipulating the information that was in their possession.

Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was indicted last Friday in an investigation that touched on the war, the leak of the identity of a CIA official married to a critic of the administration's Iraq policy. (Full story)

"The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really all about, how this administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions," Reid said before invoking Senate rules that led to the closed session.

Libby resigned from his White House post after being indicted on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury.

Democrats contend that the unmasking of Valerie Plame was retribution for her husband, Joseph Wilson, publicly challenging the Bush administration's contention that Iraq was seeking to purchase uranium from Africa. That claim was part of the White House's justification for going to war.
A rare move

Sen. Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, said Reid was making "some sort of stink about Scooter Libby and the CIA leak."

A former majority leader, Lott said a closed session was appropriate for such overarching matters as impeachment and chemical weapons -- the two topics that last sent the senators into such sessions.

In addition, Lott said, Reid's move violated the Senate's tradition of courtesy and consent. But there was nothing in Senate rules enabling Republicans to thwart Reid's effort.

As Reid spoke, Frist met in the back of the chamber with a half-dozen senior GOP senators, including Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, who bore the brunt of Reid's criticism.

Reid said Roberts reneged on a promise to fully investigate whether the administration exaggerated and manipulated intelligence leading up to the war.

I swear, I don't know why anyone would watch sitcoms anymore. This year has definitely been a, truth is stranger than fiction year.

LMFAO, the Bush adminstration is probably the most secretive and underhanded adminstration in the past 100 years... But most of that is a result of Bush looking like a underqualified nervous twit when faced with the horrors of a press conference.

Here are some of the reasons why there must be a complete and unrestricted investigation into the Bush administration's conspiracy of lies. The murder of innocent Iraqis due directly to that very conspiracy and those very lies.

Report: 40 Iraqis Die in U.S. Bombings Near Syria
In Iraq, hospital officials in the town of Qaim say up to 40 people were killed Monday in U.S. bombings near the Syrian border. An Iraqi doctor said many of the killed were women and children. Local residents said U.S. aircraft carried out a series of bombing raids beginning shortly after midnight and continuing until dawn. Military officials said they were targeting safehouses used by a local Al Qaeda leader.

So you approve of this secret Senate meeting? You openly support secret meetings and tactics?

You can try to change the subject to Bush but this is the Senate. The democrats are trying to deny America open Government.
This hasn't happened in almost 25 years.
It's nothing more than a stunt by Reid to divert attention away from the wildly good news about Bush's SCOTUS pick.

The Democrats have been strangled by the domination of House and Senate Republicans. Many of the same people that endorsed MILLIONS of dollars spent to investigate a blowjob are now refusing to look in to the worst intellegence breakdown in US history. The Democrats do not have many options left.

See, that's the problem with the Dems. Besides having no platform, no answers to improve the big issues we face, and nothing to do except obstruct, they've been looking to "bring down a president" for 5 years now. That's not how you get things done in Washington.

And Bond, the irony in you posting about a "secret" closed meeting is off-the-scale. After all the preaching about the Bush Admin's secrecy and efforts to keep things secret, you'd think that one such as yourself would despise antics like this...

Secret meetings are a part of our system of government. Senators make deals with each other all the time that are not part of the public record. Presidential advisors and focus groups determine policy based on information that is secret. Many of the reasons for the Iraq war are unknown, the complications and thought process that are involved in making a case for war are probably way above what the average person on the street grasps. Policy advisors are thinking 20 years ahead while we are all focused on the day to day activities.

A bunch of Senators speaking off the record is not a big deal to me. I'm sure plenty of them make huge decisions and deals while sitting at dinner. Do you have a problem with them talking off the record in the Senate? Does it change anything?

Nope, doesn't change anything if it's just a discussion "off the record" but then you'd admit that it's just a stunt to close down the Senate since they can have these "off the record" discussions anywhere?

Sure, I'll admit that. Perhaps it easier in the Senate with everyone present, but I'm sure the message could have been conveyed elsewhere...

As with Bush, I'm talking more about his disdain for holding public press conferences where he fields questions from reporters and I'm talking about people like Cheney that are impossible to find. It has to do with the perception that Bush and Co feel like they don't have to answer to anyone.

The left falls further every day - funny thing is, they just don't see it at all. You cannot obstruct on a daily basis without offering any reasonable plan for anything. Just starts looking pathetic after a while.

Even more funny is that most of these Dems voted for the war. They had access to the information. I guess the better question would be - who actually did their homework and READ the information before voting...

"After about two hours, senators returned to open session having appointed a six-member task force ? three members from each party ? to review the committee's progress and report back to their respective caucuses by Nov. 14."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051101/ap_...;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

Edit, this was just too funny..

Roberts' committee produced a 511-page report last summer on flaws of an Iraq intelligence estimate assembled by the country's top analysts in October 2002, and he promised a second phase would look at issues that couldn't be finalized in the first year of work.

The committee had started the second phase of the review, Roberts said, but it has not been completed. He said he had intended all along to work on the second phase beginning next week.

If I told my boss something like this I would be fired. No honestly, "I was going to start that next week!"

Have to agree on that point. Every leftist from Clinton (both) to Kerry had the same information (pre-war intelligence, for example) and came to the same conclusions that the Bush Administration did. You won't see the lefties admit that though.

Remember John "Sipping Coffee In France" Kerry and his infamous 'If you don't believe Saddam's weapons are a threat, don't vote for me'?

More lies from Irwincur. The dems and the republicans voted to authorize the authority to use force to back diplomacy, not for war itself. The president should have that authority, but the president misused that authority, hence time for some truths to come out. Do you think that if you repeat the same lies over and over they will become the truth? I guess all that banging of the drums for a year made you deaf to the facts.

No, he's 100% correct. Read here.

Your revisionist history does not cloud the truth. They never voted to wage war against Iraq no matter how badly you want it to be true.

haha i love all this talk about how Democrats will be driven into extinction, and how we are falling further and further each day. if my memory serves me correct it is your party that is facing SERIOUS problems as of right now, with several of its prominent leaders under criminal investigations. it's about time the Dems grew a pair and really held this president accountable for his lies about the war in Iraq. and irwincur how many times have you been completely and thoroughly owned in the past few days? i can count two off the top of my head.

One of the biggest problems with the last election was the fact that so many of Kerry's criticisms could be so easily countered with "but you voted for it." So the president's policies are consistently bad, why all the yeas?
