Republicans want spending cuts. There are no substantial spending cuts in these bills. Only committees formed to try to cut spending. My prediction, spending will NOT be cut in any way that comes even remotely close to the numbers specified in either of these bills.

What is it, Reid's bill is including the savings from the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan as spending cuts in his plan. WOW! I'm so impressed by his leadership!

Why doesn't anyone submit a bill which aims to examine and revamp existing programs so they are more efficient and tie that to the debt limit? As it is the Reps are just playing the axeman. Imagine if a family was in trouble financially and an advisor went in and said "Hey, I found the solution for your problems. Don't spend as much and oh, I just cut your income to help!"

No one in their right mind would accept that, yet that's what's being offered as a choice to Dem bills.

The offer Reid coughed up looks like it came direct from the RNC and it's still not "good enough" for the Lipton addicts. It's so funny whenever Boehner blames Obama for in reality, Boehner's own failure to get the Tea Party crowd he's responsible for to toe the line. Hilarious, really.

It looks to me like NOBODY has presented a plan that can pass, nobody has presented a reasonable solution that works for everyone. And to be honest, I'm not sure anyone wants to. As far as I can tell, the #1 goal is to play up this problem to be as big as possible, and to make sure the other side gets all the blame.

If you, Wolfe, a few others and myself were put in a room and given access to the necessary data we could come up with a plan which would not be perfect but which would address the issues of substance to improve things over time. I'd bet money on that and we wouldn't be ideological clones.

The 1 day rule is waived all the time.

Failing a vote for cloture does not kill a bill, just means they have to keep working on it. In this case it would be symbolic since it would show that the Reid bill can not pass the Senate.

And before you bitch about the house, why not create a bill that can get through the Senate?

The US stock market lost enough market value this week alone to fund 1/2 of the deficit alone. Real wealth going down the tubes...or maybe that was the plan, drive the market down, wait until last minute while positioning yourself into the market at lower levels, and then pass....**boom**...instant rally? :hmm:

It's more like, "Don't spend as much and oh, I'm not approving the application for your 23rd credit card."

The government has been saying they will look into becoming more efficient, cutting out the waste and fraud, like forever. But nothing significant ever happens, and if some savings are ever "identified", instead of paying off the debt the money is reallocated to a different spending program.

None of Obama's modern predecessors had the economic mess left behind by GWB to deal with, a catastrophe rivaling the Great Depression, demanding govt spending as a partial remedy. None had a tax regimen that won't pay the bills even in good times, either. Current tax rates are at their lowest of any time since WW2, and Righties can't figure out why the govt doesn't have enough money...

Reid was hoping his manuver would would shame the Senate GOP into action.

PJ it is well known you are a 100% GOP hack, but this time you went above and beyond.

And for Hayabusa Rider, it is well known what a clean bill is: "The debt limit shall be raised to $xxxxxx." Nothing more. That's the way its been done a hundred plus times in the past. All this nonsense about rolling back expenditures that have already been approved by Congress should be tackled separately, the the GOP should not be holding the nation hostage to do so.
