DENVER ? Warning to Southern delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver this August: it will be a no-fry zone.

As part of the effort to make the August 25-28 convention the greenest ever, the Democrats? guidelines for food catering include one that strikes at the heart of Southern cuisine: no fried food.

No fried chicken. No fried catfish. No fried green tomatoes. No fried okra. No fried anything.

In promoting healthy eating habits, the Democratic guidelines say every meal should be nutritious and include ?at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white.?

?It?s the new patriotism,? says Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the driving force behind the greening of the Democratic convention.

 Does this mean Democrats will be walking around with lapel pins featuring a big No sign over a fried chicken leg?

Seriously, that's just funny.

Just trying to keep those Democratic voters alive and, well, voting, for many years to come.

Sometimes, good ideas, like eating healthier, aren't as sexy as big bombs and stuff.

I guess that's one of the differences between the parties.

The democrats seem not to rely on government as much to entertain them, to give them big adrenaline rushes, they are perhaps more 'down to earth' - their programs tend to address real issues such as creating opportunity for Americans by battling corruption at the top and poverty at the bottom, and fighting only wars we have a good reason to, the main exception being Vietnam (which leading democrats, such as RFK, soon turned againt.)

The Republicans seem to rely on their party to tell them how 'moral' they are, how they 'stand up' for morality and to make them feel powerful with the mighty US military running around dominating anyone who is 'evil'. They seem to feel empty without some enemy to kill, some enemy to hate, and the government for its own (well, its big donors') interests, uses that for its policies, the price to the voters being only to hand over their money and their childrens' money (and sometimes their children).

wtf dude? they list all these foods that are banned because they are "unhealthy" but the entire list is composed of traditional black foods. it's quite obvious that this is a weak attempt to make blacks at the convention less "stereotypical" or something.

Your comment was out of the blue as I read it, so if you didn't mean what it appears, I'll retract the reaction.

But your second post is still unclear - what in the world do you mean that serving 'lots of traditional black food' - I'll put that aside - makes 'blacks seem less stereotypical'?

You're the one who made the connection between the food and blacks - so hopefully you have some relevant point about that?

You understand why, with a mixed-race nominee, there's some sensitivity about racial comments with him, and how racists use little 'dog whistle' phrases like this as attacks.

Why were fried catfish and fried okra among the four items specifically mentioned? Wouldn't things like hamburgers, fries, or corndogs be MUCH more common at any convention (would fried catfish even be sold at CES or Macworld?)

I just found the choice of foods used as examples to be somewhat curious. Seems like either the mayor of Denver or the author of the article is the one being racist.

I see your point.

It is an odd list, but the author is taking a Southern slant to the story for some reason. I don't fully understand why, as all parts of the country (and prety much the entire world) have fried foods.

The only reason I can think to ban fried foods in the convention is because it's messy, a fire hazard and the odor of grease gets into everything. I've run a bunch of festivals and we have to isolate those vendors who fry foods. Now we have to comply with new rules mandating a wide (open) space between those booths because of the fire hazard. The loss of booth space cuts down on your revenue that these vendors pay. And they pay a lot.

So, I can see some practical reasons for it beyond all this PC nonsense of "healthy foods" crap.

But mandating colors? WTH? Bwuhahaha PC tards.

Fried foods are frequently banned at indoor conventions for cleanliness and fire hazard reasons. And unless I read the article wrong, this is the mayor dictating terms, not the party.

Yet Another Queasy Spin Thread. Or... how to pretend you're telling the truth while lying out your ass.

Even a quick search could have shown you that Denver and M-SP have been trying for months to one up each other on how 'green' they could make their respective conventions, and so Denver just had to pull out all the stops.

And that makes this story less funny, how?

Don't forget euthanizing them. ;)

I don't know why panties are getting bunched in this thread. If you can't laugh at yourself sometimes, then you've got problems.

and then they'll take 3-6-9 oil capsules to get more oil in their diet.

what's wrong with vegetable oil ? no one's ever gone to war over plant oil.

everybody will just sneak out and go to McDonald's to get some proper fries.

unless they got some good Quiche or something.
