Democrats may have the votes in the House to push through the measure, although still unanswered is how they plan to cover the estimated $13 billion to $14 billion cost of giving $250 to each of more than 50 million Social Security beneficiaries. Obama hasn't offered any suggestions and the Senate measure last March was rejected 47-50 primarily because it would have stacked the cost on top of the nearly $12 trillion federal debt.
So the US is dead broke and this administration and Democrats are planning to dig the hole even deeper so they can tell the seniors that they truly deeply care about their votes..errrr..them? D:

If this administration and Democrats care about seniors so much, why don't they give the money out of their own pockets? Plenty of Democrat lawmakers are wealthy.

<<---waiting to hear about ..."but..but..but..Bussssshhhhh" excuses in 3....2....1... :)

You don't know what's good for you. You're ignorant. Seniors are ignorant. You're taking foreign money. Prove you aren't. Bigot.

remember when bush sent us all checks like 6 years ago?

So.. Bush was *right* to do that? Or are the Dems wrong for doing it now?

No - There is no good answer to that question. The hypocracy stands for itself.

:mad:Why do you hate old people

it's the diapers...

....they never help me change mine

****

More seriously: If we are/were supposed to vilify GWB for doing it, then one would expect the current leadership would at least not do the same thing. Not like they couldn't have achieved the same effect by leaving the Cost of Living adjustments in Social Security, and at least preserved the illusion they're not hypocrits.

That's fantastic, assuming disabled veterans like me get one like we got last time. This will help me replace the ipod I lost on vacation. :)

They were both wrong. Giveaways accomplish absolutely nothing. Only permanent changes (i.e. tax policy) modify investor/consumer behavior long term.

It was wrong when Bush did something similar a few years ago, it is still wrong now. Handouts, especially when the government is heavily in debt, are one way to run a country (fiscally) into the ground.

It's just an appeasement for the fact that for a second year in a row there is no cost of living increase for SS reciepients

I predict that casino earnings shortly after these checks are cashed will increase by approximately $13 to $14 billion.

Wait, there are 52,000,000 seniors in the country? That seems quite high.

It's wrong for the Dems to do this, and it's wrong for the Repubs to use no cost of living increase in their attacks against the Dems.

As usual, both sides are wrong and you have to try to pick the lesser evil.

But it's a great bribe. Perfect timing.

When Bush did it, it WAS tax policy change. Those were the tax cuts. That was OUR money to begin with.

The left does not recognize that an individual can own wealth, therefore all money is the property of government and a tax cut is a gift. In fact, any money the government does not take from you is a gift. If on the other hand government takes money from someone else and gifts you with that money, it must never be called a gift.

The oldsters are a dependable Democrat voting block. This year they are so furious that Democrats looted Medicare that the usual vague threats that Republicans want to cut Medicare won't buy their votes. Thus the bribes.

Exactly. Those whining about this are likely the same ones complaining about the lack of SS COLA. Can't please everybody.
