Why the fuck do people say this? Republic is a representative democracy. This is like saying NIC Card and knowing NIC means Network Interface Card. Would you say democratic representative democracy?

They say it because not all republics are all that democratic.

You can have a republic in which the power to elect their governing representatives is held by a sub-group so severely restricted by either race, wealth, gender or patrimony, or any combination thereof, that the resulting political entity could hardly be called democratic but could still be considered a republic.

What I want to know is why nearly everyone says "close proximity" when proximity means close to?

Also, why do so many say "very unique" when unique means oneof a kind?

Then they aren't really a republic are they? Like I said a republic is a representative democracy, if people cannot fairly vote for their representatives then it isn't a republic.

Edit: FWIW, representative democracies are not necessarily republics. Monarchic parliamentary democracies (Parliamentary Monarchies) are not Republics.

C'mon, just re-read what I wrote, perhaps a bit more slowly, until you grasp it all. Or just read what CallMeJoe wrote -- mine goes into more explanatory detail, but his post is more concise.

Countries that feel the need to put "Democratic" or "Republic" in their name are governed by dictators, but pretend that they're governed democratically. They usually have a republican system, but only one legal political party, which chooses its party slate internally.

Yeah, I guess the rule should be as follows:

"Republic of __________" can be an actual functioning democratically elected republic, or not. "__________" Republic will be bad news, whether it's People's or Democratic or Islamic or Union of Soviet Socialist, or what have you. Having any kind of modifier in front of Republic just means you're hiding something.
