Tell that to The Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Why the fuck do people say this? Republic is a representative democracy. This is like saying NIC Card and knowing NIC means Network Interface Card. Would you say democratic representative democracy?
They say it because not all republics are all that democratic.
You can have a republic in which the power to elect their governing representatives is held by a sub-group so severely restricted by either race, wealth, gender or patrimony, or any combination thereof, that the resulting political entity could hardly be called democratic but could still be considered a republic.
What I want to know is why nearly everyone says "close proximity" when proximity means close to?
Also, why do so many say "very unique" when unique means oneof a kind?
not true. Then they aren't really a republic are they? Like I said a republic is a representative democracy, if people cannot fairly vote for their representatives then it isn't a republic.

Don't make me quote myself again.Republics are not necessarily democratic; they could also be aristocratic or oligarchic.

If a country has Democratic or Republic in its name, it ain't.
And don't get me started on 'near miss'! /CarlinWhat I want to know is why nearly everyone says "close proximity" when proximity means close to?
Tell that to the Republic of Ireland. All you morons arguing didn't realize that the OP's answer was answered correctly in the second reply by mfenn.
Countries that feel the need to put "Democratic" or "Republic" in their name are governed by dictators, but pretend that they're governed democratically. They usually have a republican system, but only one legal political party, which chooses its party slate internally.
Tell that to the Republic of Ireland.
Yeah, there are exceptions to Republic, but I don't know any for Democratic, and anything named Democratic Republic is an awful, corrupt government.
Usually. You can also add 'People's Republic' and 'Islamic Republic' to that list.
