Oh look, Stardock is anti-DRM whoring again. Nothing like a marketing department playing to the chumps.

Considering the rest of the week's list.....well, 3rd ain't so impressive. This isn't a high competition week. And they still got beat out by a Sims expansion and a WoW expansion.

Well, good luck to them anyway. I'll never buy another Stardock game, for the very simple reason that I've bought 2, and they both kind of sucked.

Which are both part of two of the best selling games series in PC history?

Also, Sins of a Solar and Empire and Demigod are two of the best games I've ever played, so, wtf?

You're serious? Demigod is such a bad game... It tries to be DOTA and fails miserably. Too few items, too few characters and too few maps. It also runs pretty bad and doesn't look great for such a taxing game.

Ya dude, the variety of maps in DoTA is rad. The one with the river running through the middle is like, totally my fave. Then theres the other one with all the hiding spots in the forest, and the one with two secret shops... and then all of a sudden after a few years I found 2 more secret shops!!! On that same map! More maps, and even after years you dont find all the sekrets. My vote is for DoTA guys cus of the sick maps its gots. Yo what's the newest map for dota comin out? r they gonan do one with lava?

:p Hey, that map never gets old to me. The maps on Demigod get old fast. I got tired of them after just a few plays.

Taxing? It was chugging on my friends 6200 integrated chip, but it ran. Hardly taxing. I cruise at a solid 60 fps (locked with vsync) max settings with my rig. (Literally 0 dips)

You also have a Q9550 @ 3.4Ghz and a 4870. This game is stupid CPU intensive. Isn't it based off the Supreme Commander engine or something? That game required insane amounts of CPU power, but you were controlling a lot more units... This game you have maybe 100-150 units on the map at most. This game runs poorly.

I run this on my 2nd pc, E4300 @3.15 9800gt... 1680x1050, max settings and 2 or 4xaa, silky smooth frames at all times and situations. On my rig in sig, 4v4 seton games can get into the negative game speed after an hour - supcom definitely requires a lot more horsepower than demigod, not even in the same ballpark. My simspeed rarely drops below 8 on this pc - that's nearly 3x normal game speed.

Not worth the money. I have a 4850 512MB Crossfire, E7200 @ 3.56Ghz, 3GB of ram(I keep forgetting to RMA my 1GB stick of dead ram... need to do that soon)... I should not be getting crap frames even at 1920x1200 unless this game does not do crossfire.

Actually even if it doesn't do crossfire, 1 4850 should do 1920x1200 with max settings very smoothly. If your getting crap frames there's a problem for sure.

What are the rest of those laptop specs?
I tried it on my 6150 with 1GB RAM and Turion X2 at 1.6GHz and it really didn't like it. I wasn't intending on actually playing it, just wanted to test it out. Managed maybe 5~10fps if I'm lucky at 1024x768.

Actually, it is a trade off for smaller devs. They're not necessarily spending energy (you're right), but they are spending money which could be spent in other ways. Like more beta testing, hiring another employee, licensing technology, etc..

Plus, why waste money on something that doesn't work?

Developers don't pick (or pay for) DRM, publishers do. Very very few developers can afford to self-publish.
You're right here. So correction..

..publishers are spending money which could be spent in other ways. Like more beta testing, hiring another employee, licensing technology, etc..

Since most of the time it's the publishers who are funding the development of the game.

In the final analysis, I will not buy a mediocre game, simply on the grounds that it has no DRM. I'm a little tired of Stardock advertising that they have no DRM instead of advertising why their games are awesome. I tried both SoSE and DG and found them both underwhelming.

On the other hand, I suspect that you're annual salary is even less than that of a franchise NBA star, so are you really qualified to discuss competition?

You must've played a different version of Sins then I got. I got the version where, ironically, Pirates were the most powerful force in the entire universe..... Wasn't fun. Shouldn't have been able to happen, period. Poor design. Uninstalled.
So you weren't willing to deal with a difficulty curve and uninstalled the game. That's a perfectly fine response but you should expect that a lot of RTS gamers are going to have a vastly different experience than you did.

Everything I've read about this game says it's horribly broken technically.

I had considered buying it, but it doesn't look or sound like much more than a eyecandy update to DoTA with less hero units.

A1: Guess what? Competition happens at all levels. So, yes, I am.
A2: Cutting awfully close to a personal attack there.

B: Bad Design != Difficult curve. See above: Straight Line universe, only one way through, pirates in dead center massively and ever growing fleet.
That isn't a difficulty problem, that's just piss poor design. If you're going to put in a giant reserve fleet, a simple check to make sure that it isn't the only route to the enemy
should be in order.

I'm currently out of clever replies to the effect that you missed the joke. You'll have to cut me some slack, however, as I'm even less funny than your favorite comedian is.

I'm just guessing here, but is there ANY game that can beat out a Sims expansion and WoW expansion? I think those two games have the largest install bases in PC history.

On their week of release, I'd expect not. But it's not like these were new on the shelves. Especially with WoW, wouldn't you reasonably expect a huge portion of the people who are going to buy it will do so immediately?

FYI, WoW has around 12 million subscribers and The Sims series has probably sold around 125 million copies by this point. It's not just that these franchises are successful, it's that they are SO successful that they completely dwarf their competitors.

Stardock's gaming division is a relatively small group of developers as the company also maintains WinCustomize and ObjectDesktop. On the other hand, The Sims and WoW are handily two of the biggest franchises in PC gaming history from huge development studios with 250x and 90x more employees than Stardock respectively. How is your statement not completely crazy?

I thought that being certifiable was a prerequisite for taking part in these forums ;)
