Delta, Pioneer or Toshiba DVD drive?

Hi,

I'm looking at grabbing a dvd drive and was wondering if the Delta dvd drives that they sell at Comp USA are any good? They have one right now on special for around $40 after instant rebates and I'm wondering if this is a worthwhile player to get?

I was also thinking about grabbing the Pioneer slot load player or the Toshiba player from Newegg for about $70.

I've heard that the Pioneer is louder, but will rip faster than the Toshiba if I ever want to get into ripping. How much louder is the Pioneer though?

Now.. I have experience with the Creative Labs 12x Ovation dvd. How would these players rank against the Creative Labs? Quietness, dependability, etc..

I think the Pioneer and Toshiba are OEM's at Newegg. I really don't need the software or cables, so is OEM fine to go with? That's all you really get with a retail box, isn't it?

TIA,

Sal

I bought the Pioneer slot load 106s oem from Mwave. I'm using with the Asusdvd software that came with my vid card. I've had it about 6 months now and no complaints at all, especially about any noise from it, can't hear it over the case fan.

Good luck with what ever you decide to go with.

The difference in ripping won't make that much of a difference. I have a Pioneer 6x SCSI slot-loading DVD drive, and yes, it's fairly loud, but most drives on the market these days are. I don't see a huge difference in ripping speed between this and other drives I've used, but really, what difference does 4x ripping and 6x ripping do? Or even 6x ripping and 20x ripping? You're going to save what? A few minutes?

I love my Pioneer, if just for the slot-loading feature. That goes a long way for me with the "Hell yeah this is cool" factor.

Ok.. I've pretty much decided against the Delta already. ;) What's $20 if you're going to buy something like this. I figure that paying tax on it will even make it less than $20 and why put up with a no brand dvd player.

Anyway.. I think it's come down the Pioneer or the Toshiba. The Pioneer is cool, I guess. Might be nice to put in a car and have a lcd screen. I'm just trying to get a handle on how noisy this thing is because everyone at Newegg in the reviews section is praising how quiet the Toshiba is.

Has anyone directly compared the noisiness of the Pioneer to something like the Creative Labs dvd player?

I hate to say it, but I'm a bit of a quiet freak. I have quiet case and CPU fans, and I rubber mounted my hdd. I have a very quiet system right now and I don't want to change it all that much.

Based on quietness, the Toshiba probably looks like the drive then, correct?

Ok.. Pioneer owners, try and convince me not to go with the Toshiba. ;)

Two words: SLOT LOADING. :)

That's what made the decision for me, at least. I know that my Pioneer drive is a hell of a lot quieter than the Toshiba that's in my laptop, but that's a compact laptop drive and not built for such things as high-speed CD access.

Your DVD drive won't be that loud, anyways. The only time you have a loud drive is when you're accessing a CD for a long time, and that's usually when you're installing something. Playing a game, it just has to pull a little information at a time, and thus it's usually not spinning at full speed and grinding up a storm. For DVDs, it runs quite slowly, anyways, epecially if you're watching a movie. The drive will only spin around 4x or 6x when watching a DVD movie because it doesn't need to go any faster. If you're pulling information off a DVD disc (ripping, copying files from a DVD data disc and not a DVD movie disc), then yes, it will go the maximum speed, but even then it's not loud for long.

DVD drives aren't like hard drives, always running for one reason or another, when you open apps, close apps, look at the computer, raise your right hand, nothing like that, so sound shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I've read about some bad Delta CD drives, but my Delta DVD drive has been working just fine..

No advantage to slot-loading besides looking damn cool. Everyone that has seen my drive at school has said they wish they had one like mine, including my Mac-addict roommate. He was even thinking of setting up my Mac to have one by cutting a hole in a drive cover so he could insert and remove CDs with a drive like mine. I've always liked car CD players, the way you just slide the CD in without a bulky tray, so I got my wish.

Uh, don't drives spin at 1x when watching a DVD movie?

The advantage to slot-load DVD is that it's cool.

The advantage to tray-load DVD is that you can use the smaller format disks. The 3" CD format that includes the various business-card CDs.

That's about it.

Delta's SUCK. I've had two of them. Both died within 7 months. Bought the 50x one for $19.95 ($39.95 after $20) at Staples. It died within a 30 days. Paid $10 postage to RMA it back to the factory. 6 months later, it dies too. These CDROMs are CRAP!

Do yourself a favor and save yourself the headache. Pay the extra $10 now and get a decent CDROM that will actually last you more than 12 months.

I like my 105s, I was supposed to get a 106s but the place I got it from listed it as 105/106s, and guess what I got stuck with. The noise doesn't bother me too much and ata33 vs 66 doesnt make any difference. It is a tad loud, but it doesn't bother me especially compared to my very loud yamaha 16x burner. So I coud imagine that the 106s is very nice.

An opinion from a Toshiba 12X DVD user. The drive is fast and quiet. DAE is fast too. Have no problems reading any cloneCD or Cdr. Should check this out if you have a chance. The Pioneer are not too bad too. My room mate as one it's kinda quiet for a 16X DVD.
