Delta Airlines Refund

Earlier this week, I booked a flight from Denver to Salt Lake City for today because a good friend is having his wedding reception tonight. This morning, I woke up sick and am wondering about getting a refund on my ticket. I called Delta and set on hold for 15 minutes before having a lady tell me that my ticket is non-refundable and my best chance at getting anything would be to call the corporate office, which of course is not open until Monday.

Has anybody here gone though this? Do you have any advice? Since I can't contact the corporate office until Monday, what I am wondering is would I have a better chance at getting a refund by canceling my flight, not showing up or if that even matters at all?

I would try very hard to get a doctor's note to show them. They do not have to refund you, but in case of illness it sometimes happens. You could probably get a voucher for the asking.

Ask your question at flyertalk.com. Those people know every angle in the world.

You are SOL. You bought these online at the cheapest price? Then, yeah, good luck. usually the fne print states that the ticket is not refundable. You can try to get a refund by pleading, but that is kind of slim. Best bet would be to ask to move the departure dates (not free of course).

You bought a non-refundable ticket and now want a refund?

You're better off asking for a voucher to use for a future flight.

I was well aware that it was not refundable when I purchased it, but I didn't expect to get sick and now I'm just trying to find a way to keep from getting screwed out of my money for services that I didn't receive. That said, now the hotel that I booked is trying to pull a similar stunt. When I booked the hotel, it said nothing about being non-refundable and since I had gotten a refund before from the hotel chain, I thought nothing of it. I just called to cancel to have some condescending, rude lady tell me that it was not refundable and then tried to rub my face in that fact. I wish I had got her name as I now want to report her and her attitude. Anyway, between the flight and the hotel, it looks like I could be screwed out of $280.

you're a cheapskate, if you weren't so cheap you'd be getting a refund.

Getting a refund for a non-refundable ticket is dammed near impossible under any circumstances, and just because you're sick...well, that's not likely to be something that will be considered a justifiable reason to the airlines or hotel.
While you say you received no service for your monies paid, the way they see it, you received a reservation...they held a seat/room for you...and may or may not be able to re-sell it.

USUALLY, unless you purchase trip insurance, you're just screwed.

I caught the flu in December, spent a whole weekend puking and sitting on the can. Monday morning I got my ass up and went to work rather than call in sick, and I was still puking every so often. I could've taken sick days and not lost any money at all.

If it involved money for a flight and hotel, you can bet I'd be there, with a bag, ready to go.

Normally I still travel when I am sick. I have taken many trips when I have been sick before. Unfortunately, I am too sick to drive and the airport is nearly 150 away. Getting there is not possible for me. without swapping the seat of my car for a toilet.

They will probably not refund you, but you might be able to get a flight credit for later on less like, 100-150 dollars.

Is it really that bad?

You can do anything you want or need to. I had to photograph an evening basketball game for next day publication and on the way to it I started puking and almost crapped my pants. I clenched hard and sat on the far side of the gym by a door with a trash can just outside. I went out to puke in it 3x before I was done but I made deadline.

I know sometimes you can be deathly ill and unable to work or travel, but if you really are that sick then losing $280 wouldn't be your immediate concern. I'd be more concerned about missing a good friends wedding.

Another "do what you gotta do" story: I woke up at about 3 a.m. a few weeks ago and is was snowing like a bitch but our street hadn't been plowed yet. At around 4 a.m I see snow flying and one of my neighbors from farther down the street is shoveling a path at least 1/8 mile long by hand down the center of the road to get his truck out and get to work. Granted it was the first snow fall of the year and the stuff was light and fluffy, but there was A LOT of it. I had to give the guy credit for manning up and getting shit done. I've always admired people like that and wished I had a bit more intestinal fortitude myself. (notice I didn't go out to help him.)

Do you think this makes you a tough, manly guy? Because what it really makes you is a cock-smoking fucktard contributing to the spread of a deadly illness. Fuck you.

I always got pissed when people came to work sick and "shared" with their co-workers.

If the OP's problem is just the shits...imodium is your friend...

THIS IS SO MESSED UP!

You need to start calling/emailing everyone and everything you can!

I was in a similar situation (didn't get car insurance because I wasn't planning on getting in an accident.) I ended up having a few too many at the bar, and long story short, put 3 people in the hospital. They sued me, but counter-sued them, the car maker, the bar, the department of transportation, etc. (just cuil shotgun lawsuit) and now I live off the settlement monies and never have to work again.

Or you can look up the definition of non-refundable.

If the cancellation deadline has passed, it doesn't matter if he has not paid up front. Hotels, however, are more flexible than airlines and the OP can explain *nicely* to a manager and try to avoid being charged. This can be easy if the hotel can sell his room to another traveller for tonight. (I've done this a few times.)

As for the airline ticket, the OP is SOL. He can cancel his NR reservation prior to the flight and get a travel voucher minus a cancellation fee.
