Sounded terrible. Wouldn't read disks. Defective unit or just get what you pay for? (<$40 at Staples)

Someone posted previously that this was just a rebadged Digital Research drive, which is equally crappy.

Decent drives like Asus can be found on-line for $40-something ...

Got mine at staples for a grand total of 10$. Not a bad second drive. Dont build your system with this as the primary though. You get what you pay for 😀! Ten bucks doesnt actually buy alot.

I have this CD from Staples. While I would say it is not the best out there, but I think this CD-ROM does it's job.

Preety good so far. It's not that loud at all in my setup.

Got mine last night from Staples - Reads disks fine, but sound is terrible - like jetfighter.
Also door flips down - looks strange.
But I can't complain: $40-$20coupon-$20 rebate + $2Tax = $2 total is not bad for second drive in addition to my CD-RW.

I am replying from my jail cell. I got here as I went on a neighborhood killing spree when the high-pitch whine that came from my delta 50x drove me to violent insanity for a short time.(Like in Star Trek)

Okay, actually i just returned it and bought a drive that didnt make that terrible noise. Amazingly, they were understanding at COMPUSA. THey must have experienced the horror first hand.

Do youself a favor. Save your 20.00, add a bit more and go get a real drive.

P.S. This was to be my second-system drive, but the whine could be heard from accross the room.

I used to work for a small computer shop in this area, and the owner sent in some Delta CDrom drives on a few occasions. At least 1/2 or more out of each case of 10 were bad, or would go bad within a few weeks of a new system leaving the shop with one. I would not recommend these drives at all. Their quality control may have improved a bit since I worked with them (almost 2 years ago), but just from past experience I would never buy one. :Q

Seem to have pretty good luck the AOpen (Acer) cdroms of all speeds. Started out on 4x and currently have a 40x in one of my systems.....
