Ok...

1) My work system, like every other computer on the premesis, runs real-time antivirus scanning and checks hourly for fresh virus defs (every 15 minutes for the servers).

2) My work system, like every other computer on the premesis, scans every file, on every hard drive, every day, with every option.

3) If you think two hours of AV scanning is "pretty fast," then . Suffering through two hours of AV-scanning traffic is something I wouldn't enjoy even with SCSI on my side, which is why I split off the server duties to a nice lil' nForce2 system that attaches to my primary rig (an A64) via a direct gigabit-Ethernet connection.

Bigger picture: at home I use normal 7200rpm snail drives like most people do (Seagate Barracuda ATA IV and 7200.7) and call it good. Sometimes they annoy me, but at least I'm not under the gun here.

You go, Mr. Eagle  (I made that one too :D). And not just the RAM capacity, but the bandwidth. On a single-channel system, yet. :p And yes, it does matter, on an Intel-based system...
The conclusion: there's no performance drop in 2D when using the nForce2's IGP over a GeForce4 Ti 4600. We're running similar benchmarks for another review and to give you an idea of how Intel's 845G fares in this test, discrete graphics is around 11% faster than the 845G's integrated graphics in Business Winstone 2001.

Ya I can be a bit direct.:p It just bugs me when people with 4000+ Posts at AT succum to Marketing Machines of BIG corps pushing junk while very knowleable people like Evan has spent a good amount of time to build the best price/performace system available. Oh well.

My (now) step sister bought the cheapest machine she could find.
It's an emachine with a 5400RPM HDD, celeron 1.8 and 128MB shared memory.
It's got the integrated Intel graphics and sound and no AGP slot.
sound familiar?

First, let me say that the "intel extreme graphics" can't play anything. I installed NFSHP2 wihch is not a new game and it couldn't even run it at more than 3 fps with the lowest settings which is basically coloured in wire-frame.

Second, the intel sound sucks. Even hooked up to my speakers. There's a constant hiss and lots of weird pops.

Third 128MB of ram on XP is the slowest thing ever. Win 98 ran better on 32mb. It lags opening the start menu.

Fourt: that 5400rpm HDD kills. I upgraded her ram to 256MB (had to try twice-it wouldn't take the first brand) and the system was still slower than molases on even the desktop (I have seen 256MB systems - they're okay on the desktop) the HDD just slowed it down way too much.

Fifth: the celeron. This thing sucks. It's so slow. Just...the system is ridiculously slow. When I worked for Compaq, we sold 700Mhz duron systems which were several times snappier than this thing. It's just a POS.

AND...basically, it's a carbon copy of the Dell that this guy is pimping. I'm sorry but these things are ass.

I agree with DaveSimmons
Dell's are fine for just business. But I wouldn't buy one for gaming or overclocking (although I've heard that overclocking a Dell can be done but I haven't tried it.).

I can pick up a CDRW for like 20

i dont think anything comes close to this price if you include XP Home

and definitely not if you factor in MS Office Small Business Edition

I paid this in August l and IMO it would still be a fantastic deal today

the AT guide does not include an OS either so that is at least 600 w/ a monitor

but i'd take the afore mentioned dell any day over the guide at 587 no monitor

Anyway, special buys don't mean anything. You can get them on components too

Not only can you also get them on components, but in both cases, you can never count on their being a good deal for you when you finally have the $ and need an upgrade. I would personally cut the rebates off at $100, as you can ALWAYS find an OEM PC of any kind with $100 MIR. Higher often takes work for a PC that really is decent.

for personal use most people will have a window, though... if you're giving yourself just a week to find a computer deal you're not going to do well. if you give yourself 3 months...

I just hate how everyone says the only good dell deals come with 128 MB memory a crappy vid card and celeron

this is obviously not the case

I am currently using a computer I built myself but if I see a deal like that again when I feel it is time to upgrade than I won't think twice

like this
lol is this a joke???

do you like not having an AGP?
do you like 128 ram on winXP?
do you like integrated graphics?
do you like 5400 rpm hard drives?

if the answer is yes, buy a dell.

I mean come on you are buying a bunch of interchangeable parts and putting something together.

I could probably teach a 10 year old kid to do the same

people on this forum act like buying a dell is the dumbest thing you can ever do and i just think that it is ridiculous

I have a dell with the following:
P4 2.0
512 DDR2700
120GB WD
9700 Pro
Sound Blaster Live Audio card
XP Home SP1a
It does OK for Gaming but I'm looking into upgrading it soon. My current board can accept up to a P4 3.06 @ 533MHz but I'm hoping the price of that processor will go down just a bit before purchasing one. Newegg has retial for $226.00 or I can find one at Price Watch for $209.00 tha includes shipping.

hmmm, I got in on one of the PE 400SC deals back in the end of Aug. last year. $400 shipped, $300 after rebate and free shipping. Tax was extra 20$.

Sold all the parts I did not want for around $120. So my net cost was $180 for the 875P board, case, and psu.

Has an 8x AGP Pro slot, 4 PCI slots, gigabit NIC onboard. Everything else in it is interchangable. PLUS, I even have it overclocked to 233MHz FSB:RAM at 1:1 ratio. Using a P4C 2.4GHz running at 2.8Ghz and Crucial DDR400 is running at 233MHz. My sig should have the system specs listed... I am happy with my Dell purchase.

all for $274 (400SC from hotdealz)

I'd say it beats the AT recommended hands down, after adding some RAM/CDRW/Vid still cheaper and faster and more expandable

Give me the dell link and I'll show you a better and cheaper system. Include dells shipping and tax which you guys seem to always leave out of these "deals"

I'd say you need to read some reviews and educate yourself.

mchammer187,

It's not fair to compare a system build I put together with absolutely no MIR's, coupons, or any other such deals. I could easily lurk around Hot Deals for a week and eventually find an 800JB for $20 after MIR or a 9800 Pro for $60 after MIR.

If you're comparing Dell and pre-builts it isn't fair to include any rebates, coupons, or any other such deals for either the Dell or pre-built unless they're available 24/7, which by definition they aren't.

Dell isnt all that bad, if you know where to look...:

Inspiron 8600-

1.7Ghz Pentium M
Intel Wireless MPCI
1GB PC2700 DDR memory
15.4" TFT 1920x1200 widescreen
128MB ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo
60Gig 7200RPM HDD
4x DVD+RW
XP Home
Office Basic
72WHR battery

=£1200 through an e-code. The same specc'd system without the e-code = ~£1900

This is one HELL of a deal, I cant get it anywhere else in the UK. Well, I challange you so called 'we can find you a better without using dell' people to find me something similar in the UK :)

If not , STFU , not all Dell's deals are bad at all...

It comes down to what your level of expertise is, and what you want out of a system.
If you don't play games, or do heavy video/graphic editing, then any one of the dell deals that is cheaper than the AT recommended one is good. Like the 400SC deal, that would work great for me by spending around 100 on ram and a cdrw. I don't play games, and the 2.4 with 800 would be great for anything I want to do. I could even get a better vidcard with 64mb ddr mem for ~$50 for dual monitor support or lite graphic editing. So, if I can get a fast PC for ~$400 I'd prefer it over spending extra money just cause all the parts may be the best.
Plus, the fact of having a warranty from one place, and a reliable company at that appeals to some of us. I would much rather be able to call one company to deal with anything that went wrong, instead of having to deal with different manufacturers.
