If you look at the Dell US site, you won't see the XPS M170 in the drop down menu for notebooks. It means that whenever this bad boy will be released, it will be soon.

It looks really nice, but I think my next notebook will be an Asus W3J.

yeah, that asus is pretty sweet. Too bad for its lackluster 1280x768 resolution. I was hoping to see at least WSXGA+ so that I can fit more excel spreadsheets on it 🙁

I don't think they make WSXGA+ panels in the 14.1" size. But despite the resolution, it is a sweet machine. Plus, it will be easier to keep games running at the native resolution.

Wow! This sounds awesome. I need to get one of those 40% off coupons and get this thing. I'll be bringing it to University of Rochester next year.

According to an authorized reseller over at Notebookforums, the XPS line will not have discounts anymore. More along the lines of other gaming notebook companies, just a flat price with what you see is what you pay. Base model with the 7900GS will be 2500 and the 7900GTX at 3200 🙁

Link on Dell's site where you can get Inspirons with 7800s and duos?

Ever since the XPS M170 came out, all of Dell's coupons say, "Except for XPS" on them!

The stackable $35 of $300 type coupons will work but not the percent off coupons however every once in a while, they forget to code in the "except for XPS" in the coupon and you can steal one at a reduced price.

Dell will still have sales and specials on the XPS line seperately but it's usually a free DVD burner or extra battery or something like that.

Hehe, too bad Anandtech won't benchmark Sagers etc. I have the 9750 and my 3Dmark05 is over 6800 with no tweaking.

Dell = overrated.

Dell = actually using mobile chips.

The M1710 may still be a desktop replacement, but it's definitely more totable than the Sager 9750. The Sager weighs 12.5 pounds! That makes the Dell seem light... and I imagine the Dell is quieter and cooler, too.

Yep, those Sagers are nice. Only thing is I got my brand new loaded M170 for $1350 from Dell so I just couldn't pass that up. What I wouldn't do though for a 4800+ X2 though??

Thank you for the informative article on the Dell Gaming system. I was curious on if you know how this Laptop: http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/go_np5950.html would stack up to the Dell system. I am thinking of purchasing a gaming laptop and would like to know if you have had any experience with the sager systems vs. the Dell systems. Would the SLI in the sager give me twice the performance of the Dell?
---------

I haven't used the Sager system, but let me just provide the few comments looking at the specs.

First, SLI pretty much never gives you twice the performance, and on that system it has the older 7800 GTX cards instead of the new 7900 GTX card. That means that the cards are clocked slower. Going along with that, 7800 cards are built using a 110 nm process, while the 7900 is built using a 90 nm process. The smaller process results in lower power requirements and thus lower heat out. The end result is that I'm sure the Sager system will be hotter, and while it might be a bit faster I'm not sure it's worth it. There are other issues I see as well.

Dual core Athlon 64 processors compete very well with Intel's Core Duo processors. AMD Turion processors are at present only single core. That may not matter a whole lot right now, but I would again give the advantage to the M1710.

In terms of size, that Sager system is a real beast. 15 pounds with a battery pack means it's about 50% heavier than the Dell. That may not matter much to you, but I certainly wouldn't want to have to carry that laptop around a lot. Periodically toting it between two locations would be fine, but hauling that thing around a trade show or university campus wouldn't be my idea of a good time.

Finally, the Sager system has a larger display (19 inch widescreen) but a lower resolution. The Dell system can run practically any game (*NOT* FEAR and Oblivion struggles at times with maximum detail setttings) at native resolution with a single 7900 GTX card. If you're going to have a 15 pound "laptop" then you might as well have a 1920x1200 resolution as well. It also ships default with 1 GB of RAM and a smaller, slightly slower hard drive.

When I look at all the aspects together, as well as the final price, that particular system doesn't look like a great deal -- and besides, it's still in preorder status. I'm sure there will be 7900 SLI laptops available shortly, so if you really want the added heat and add performance of SLI, that's what I would wait for. I would also insist on some form of dual core processor, but that's personal preference.

uhhh since when did core duo perform the same as a X2?? 😱 Core Duo isnt even a ture 64bit processor. What i would honestly like to see is a Merom. Also is core duo on a 65nm die???

That Sager system is a TURION system, not Athlon 64. That was my point. I'm shocked to even see a Turion in a 15 lb. notebook. X2 is faster, but it's also just going to up the heat requirements even more. Not worth it IMO. I'd wait for S1 to start shipping with dual-core, dual-channel Turion chips. Might be several months, though.

Since it launched?

That's a 2.16 GHz Core Duo (the current high-end model) versus an X2 3800+, but the point is that you can get a laptop which is faster than some current desktop processors, all other factors being equal. I suspect even the 2.0 GHz Core Duo would match or slightly exceed the 3800+.

Whether a CPU is 32-bit or 64-bit has little to do with its effective performance in most cases. "64-bit" mainly affects the memory registers (how much memory the system can address at once) and math precision. For a game, that doesn't matter very much - games only care about how quickly memory and math are accessed.

Core Duo (and Solo) is built on a 65 nm die. That means that it runs relatively coolly and efficiently.
