Cliffs:

1. Does anyone know where I can download the SATA drivers for a Dell XPS 400?

Long Story:

A friend of mine gave me a Dell XPS 400 after he had bought a new computer and did not want this one anymore. Apparently, the old hard drive had died, was removed and discarded. He has none of the disks. I put a new SATA HD in, but ran into big problems trying to install WinXP. After researching the problem, I have determined that I need the SATA drivers. I have gone to the Dell website and ordered replacement disks, but I have the whole damn Thanksgiving weekend to play with this new toy, and I cannot get past step one!

I am going to try slipstreaming SP3 because some have said online that they have had some success, but I would like to have the option of actually having the drivers should that prove unsuccessful (I am downloading SP3 right now).

Thanks.

I have really researched this. I just cannot find the drivers online anywhere.

Its it an XPC or XPS, never heard of the xpc

the sata driver directly from dell is Here if it is a Xps 400

if you use them from the floppy you may have to select the right one.
or you can use nlite to slipstream them into the install disk, just select drivers and you want to add them as the test mode driver

Is there an option to enable legacy sata operation in the BIOS? I bet that's your problem.

There is a setting for AHCI vs. ATA. Is that what you mean? If so, I assume that I should try ATA if I had been on AHCI?

I tried that and it did get further in installation process in that the Windows installer recognized the drive and allowed me to create partitions, but it could not format the partition, saying the hard drive may be damaged (it is not - it is new and was used briefly ion another computer). I also swapped out the SATA cable to see if taht was the problem. No go.

I guess I will have to wait for the Dell disks to arrive :(

You should have been good to go after creating a partition.

I can't imagine why a HD could be damaged by formatting.

I would have used dban and zeroed the drive and tried again.
