DELL Western Digital 80GB Raptor SATA 10k HD?

I just scored myself a pair of these off eBay and I'm about to give them a try. Has anyone here ever heard of 80gb raptors? From what I understand these are only sold in DELL workstation PCs and are DELL exclusives.


One of the sellers I bought one of the raptors from removed the S/N #, I guess it was for safty reasons. I also did the same to the other drive but via photoshop.

Yeah I know if I wasn't searching for a 74gb raptor I would have never found them. I also got them much cheaper that the 74gb raptors that are on ebay right now. Damn I'm lucky!

Have you checked that they are actually 80GB? I'm just thinking it may be a rounding up from 74GB from the seller. I really seems strange for WD to have developed platters that are only incrementally larger (unless you drive has only one platter) than what they already have on the market.

To my knowledge, Raptors only have one platter.

Check the pictures I posted DRavisher, these are 80gb raptors. I'm in the process of installing Windows XP and all I can say is SUPER FAST!!!! WOW!


I've also heard news of a 160gb 16mb cache raptor in the works, but don't have any clue when its coming out.

Doing a google search, they do seem to exist, probably only sold to OEM's and pretty rare.

Ok i'm convinced Congrats on that buy. Kensai: I thought that the Raptor 73,4GB drives used two of the same platters that the 36.7GB drives used? (36.7 *2 = 73.4). I could of course be wrong though.

if true the increase in platter density would decrease seeks and increase sequential I/O.

WD has needed to update the raptor for quite some time.

The seek time for the raptors I have are 4.5 ms, don't know if the 74 raptors are the same or not. I guess WD is using just 1 80gb platter? Makes sense if there going to release a 160gb raptor.

If it was 1 80GB platter, there would be a substantial increase in I/O performance.

4.5ms is the official read seek for the 74GB raptor.

Sorry, WD has been selling drives marked as WD800xx for years. They are 80GB (74 formatted), 7200 rpm, and SATA. Not Raptors.

If you look at the supplied picture it says WD Raptor.

Like he said if you look at the picture is says its a raptor. If you look at the WD800GD..you can look it up and see that the G signifies it's a 10k rpm drive..

Everything. See the Anandtech article about Raptors on Raid. .000001% performance increase, 200% chance of all your data being lost.
