"The promise comes from none other than CEO Kevin Rollins, and is probably just another indication that Dell is twisting and turning like a twisty turny thing with the mighty Intel or is hanging out for a better deal with AMD."

Who the hell wrote this garbage?

Who the hell wrote this garbage?

Someone with a sense of satire?

FAB 36 is being outfitted with 0.65um ready for early 2006 production IIRC, it's right next to FAB30 in Dresden.
They won't be producing anything for a while, but if/when a Dell deal would be made, it wouldn't be for a while anyway.

I would guess that dual core processors may be the kicker.
If AMD get well performing dual Opterons out before there are any Dual Xeon's, then AMD will be a hard act not to choose for the higher end market (servers).

Haha - hasn't Dell be saying that they've been considering AMD for years?

Yes, but apparently they actually are serious considering selling Opteron based systems.

Well that's not quite the same thing. Opterons are anything but targeted for the desktop market.

Just one, IIRC, Fab 36 I believe is going to be the name, next door to Fab 30, which both are in Dresden, Germany. Fab 25 is in Austin, Texas which only does flash now but the test facitlty I believe still gets the Athlons shipped to it from Germany.

As for the article, reminds me of thisone which NFS4 posted back in November.

No.

theinquirer.net -- not exactly a bastion of fine journalism. More like a pro-AMD computer geek tabloid rumor page (and I'm an AMD fanboi! 😀 ).

I think the issue here is that while Intel is ahead with the desktops, AMD is beating Intel is the PC server market, and Dell doesn't want to lose out on that lucrative business market (my company is 100% Dell for example). Statements like this are just Dell letting Intel know that they are dissatisfied. I seriously doubt Dell would ever turn to AMD.

Suuuuuuuuuuure they are. This time it's NOT a tactic to get intel to give them deeper discounts on boards and chips. No way. I'll believe it when I can actually buy an AMD system with a Dell label. Not one second before.

What if someone else buys an AMD system with a dell label and you go look at it? Would you believe it then? Or are you one of those crazy people that claim that nothing outside of themselves is real and its all just a crazy illusion produced soley for their entertainment, like that wacko who runs the entire universe, you know, the guy you read about in the history texts by Douglas Adams.

on a serious note, it would be very tough for dell to switch to intel. intel provides cpus, motherboards, nics, wifi nics, video (onboard stuff), and maybe some more i dunno about. by switching to amd... dell still needs to negotiate deals for everything else that is not a cpu. i'm sure if dell went with amd cpu's... should dell still want intel nics or whatever... those prices are going to skyrocket. well... perhaps not skyrocket, but certainly go up.

Well they wouldn't have to meet the demand tomorrow...they would have to ramp up. Once they got a commitment from Dell for a certain number of procesors...you better believe AMD has a plan in place.

Getting Dell to sell their processors would probably send their stock prices to 3 times what they are now 😛

Eh, dell could care less about the performance difference

as for the price, i'm sure they pay what they want already with intel. AMD probably won't be able to beat their prices either. The low AMD prices are there only so amd can start selling more!

I found that to be true myself. That is why I typically run one custom built AMD system and one Dell System.
