I have never heard of the Vostro line. It looks like it has a second slot for a second optical drive.

This is a solid system for the price.

$419 for a C2D, with 1GB of Ram...add another GB of RAM and a decent video card, and you've got a pretty nice gaming system (especially if you upgrade the processor sometime in the near future)
 
the Vostro is the business version of the Inspiron desktop line, black in color instead of white. I got a inspiron desktop with the 2140 in it, put a 7600gt in it and it performs really nice, i would imagine the Vostro would perform the same.
 
The only bad thing about the vostros are their weak PSUs. I don't think any of them could support even a 7900gs...or am i wrong?

This particular model can be configured with an 8600...so it's not AWFUL.
 
The laptop looks decent for the price also. Just stick another stick of RAM in there.

Hell, with the upgrade to a 2 GHz Turion, the price comes to 600$. Seems unbeatable at that pricepoint.

IIRC, the PSU has a single 12V rail @ 18A. And there are most likely no 4-pin molex nor PCIe power connectors, SATA only.

This should definitely not be purchased for high-end gaming.
 
I'm thinking about pitching this system as an upgrade for my current PC at work. I work in publishing and need a system for using Indesign, Photoshop, etc. I'm familiar with the current hardware and just built my home system, but that was a more high-end system. I'd be trying to keep this as cheap as possible without sacrificing performance where needed. Do you guys have some advice on configuring it?

I know that the E2140 and E2160 are both highly overclockable, but I'm guessing that the Dell BIOS doesn't have any overclocking options. Can anyone confirm this?

I would keep the base 1 gig ram and then buy 2 gigs of Crucial Ballistix for $60 after rebate to replace it. The base 80 gig hard drive should be fine and I would rather add a 2nd hard drive myself than pay Dell's markups on a larger one. Same goes for the optical drives - keep the base DVD drive and add a burner on my own.

Areas where I am less sure are the video card and monitor. I generally detest integrated graphics, but this system will never be used for games, video, or 3D work - do I need more than integrated graphics? If I get integrated graphics, will I have a videocard slot to upgrade later?

The monitor choices are very difficult, as there are big price differences. The more space the merrier, but color accuracy is also a concern, which makes me lean towards the more expensive digital panels. I personally like using widescreen monitors at home and like being able to view things side by side. A page in a book is a portrait orientation, so you could make an argument for a square panel, but I am usually working in spreads.

The bottom line is that I'm asking my boss to spend the company's money, so I don't want to spend money where I don't need to, but I also want to make sure the system is going to do what I need it to do.

If you add an optical drive, make sure it is SATA.

There is a PCI Express x16 slot, so you can add something like an 8600 GT. But do NOT get a card that needs a 6pin power connector.

Should be very quiet. These systems aren't as powerful as the XPS 410 and Precision 390 and those are more quiet than any custom system I've ever built.
