I am the owner of
  • Dell Venue 8 Black 16gb
  • Nexus 7 FHD (the new model)
  • Former owner of the original nexus 7 (the old one).

This tablet is not as nice as the new nexus 7. The screen is an ips screen but it is definately a cheaper one, the colors look wash out and sometimes off, and the higher resolution of the new nexus is very nice for reading.

The tablet also is very picky with its touch inputs, often I have to "reset" the screen by pushing the off/on button (quickly turning off the screen) then push the button again to have the screen turn back on a second later.

I bought the black for $130 from dell website, they were running at a time a $50 dollar off coupon. I would say the tablet is fine for $130, I wouldn't get it for $180 though for that is too close in price to the nexus which I think is a better tablet.

Also giving everyone a heads up, the Dell Venue 8 Pro 32gb (aka the windows one with the faster cpu and office) is currently $200 on tigerdirect website as well as micro center in store.

Good information. have no experience with Dell tablets, i think if you're to get a tablet to use its good to pay alittle more to get some decent which you want to keep it.
However, this price is good if you want to gift someone a tablet. amazon kindles are also cheap and good for that matter.

thanks for the feedback. your need to reset doesn't sound normal. any chance you received a defective tablet that should be exchanged or returned?

Possibly, it works 90% of the time, but get the wrong time of friction (your hands are normal, but with some moisture or oils) and the screen will mess up. These same situations do not appear with other tablets/phones I have tried.

i bought the red venue last week. your assessment on the screen is accurate. i own the original nexus 7, and there is a clear difference. the difference between the new nexus 7 must be even more pronounce. my daughter loves the red, and i think she is too young to notice the difference.

i think the venue 8 is a very good deal at $129/$149 and just fine for my daughter. we have not experienced any weird behaviors. if a nexus 8 with 16GB existed, it would probably be around $259, which i would buy for myself (if my DW approves). i really like the 8".

the red venue is still available for $149.99 at Microcenter, so it might be one of those long-term sales until they reduce enough inventory.
