DELL UP3218K: 8K INSANITY

Dell also unveiled a quite outrageous 8K monitor that’ll set you back $5,000. It has all the professional specifications you’d expect from a high-end monitor, including 100% coverage of the Adobe RGB (great for photographers), sRGB and Rec709 and an impressive 98% DCI-P3 gamut coverage (great for video pros).

It’s not strictly speaking an 8K device, but manages a 7,680x4,320-pixel resolution for a pixel density of 280ppi. That’s the equivalent of four 4K screens. On a 31.5-inch panel, that’s very impressive. Brightness is rated at a huge 400 nits and contrast is 1,300:1.

The only way to get smooth 60Hz 8K performance on this monitor is to hook it up to two DisplayPort 1.3 connectors. If you use just one, you’ll get a juddery 30Hz instead.

On the back are the two DisplayPorts,and four USB 3.0 connectors. Using Xrite software and hardware, you’ll be able to self-calibrate the monitor using calibrator connected to the USB port.

We had a very close look at this screen and it really is stunning. It’s like the glossiest fashion magazine you’ve ever seen but in screen form. Vibrant colours, invisible pixels and incredible detail really do steal the show.

Pretty crazy req, very surprised that DP 1.4 didn't up the bandwidth, guess we will need 1.5 asap.

once 8K HDR (with accurate colors) on 31.5" is 1K I'm totally in. 2 years from now?

There was one announced. It just isn't available. Just like this one is announced and probably won't be available.

This is pretty obviously aimed at professionals. 8K lets you view any video (RED has only just released an 8K camera) without scaling or cropping, which would obviously be nice for high-end video production. Same deal with photos from all but the highest resolution still cameras. Or maybe you're texturing or 3D modelling or doing CAD work or any other task where having an extremely high resolution display would be nice.

There are a lot of use cases where high refresh rates and contrast ratios aren't very important.

8k is the ideal resolution. As close to pixel-less as you can get without going pixel-less. All the pieces are coming together, converging from separate and unrelated corners, and all on time. The ideal monitor in 2020, its coming.

I'd settle for a 32" 4k, I have their P2715Q and like it, a 32" version would suit me fine.

The QNIX thread here is a 32 inch 4K for under $400... it's barely anything why not? Mine arrived in 2 days...

It probably got cancelled because they couldn't figure out how to solve that $5000 price tag problem they were having. Not to mention Asus releasing a 4k, high refresh HDR beast right along side of it for about $1,200 according to price rumors.

I always love these graphics. The advertisement pictures for the 1080p and 4k monitors used to be super sharp when they were the bees knees. Now all of a sudden they're blurry.

Nevermind the fact that it's only as good as the monitor you're viewing it on...

But yeah, nothing on a 1080p monitor looks like the left image. Intentional distortion.

Yup, 8k is where it's at. Even if you cannot drive games at that resolution, why worry? 4k and QHD ("1440p") both scale perfectly there with multiple pixel mapping - zero interpolation needed.

I just hope we get high refresh rate by 2020! I'll settle for 8K 100Hz, but the dream is 240Hz. Considering FHD only hit 240Hz a few months ago I think 2020 is awfully optimistic for the true "ideal" monitor.
