Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP or Samsung SM-226BW

I'm having real trouble deciding between the Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP (20") and the Samsung SM-226BW (22").

I'll be using the monitor for a variety of tasks. Plenty of gaming (FPS games are a favourite), watching movies, web design, photo editing and general office work.

I've heard a lot from people on the IPS vs. TN debate, but I just can't make up my mind.

Based on this, which monitor would you recommend?

Thanks for all your help.

P.S. In the UK, the Dell 2007WFP is still using a S-IPS panel and not a PVA one.

IPS vs TN is a debate?

:p

2007FP easily if you're guaranteed an S-IPS. Same or slightly slower response time, much better color reproduction, wider viewing angles (easier on the eyes), and higher contrast in some instances. You will probably have much less backlight bleeding, too.

Thanks for the reply.

I just wanted to add that I made a typo... I meant to say 2007WFP - 20" widescreen.

Then by all means S-IPS.

The 2007WFP contains LG Philips' flagship 20" widescreen panel, the same included in the NEC LCD20WGX2 (though B-grade instead of A-grade). Its advantages over the 2007FP include a faster response time and much higher contrast. Those also translate into major advantages over the 226BW. 2007WFP vs. 226BW is no debate at all. I saw a 226BW at the store and compared with the LGP 20" I have at home (NEC), there's no way I'd choose the 226BW for any aspect. The response time was actually slower and it looked muddy and lifeless in comparison.

S-IPS 2007WFP FTW. I love mine. If I could get another S-IPS one I would. It's the first run with some gradient issues but honestly they aren't noticeable 99.9% of the time and it's such a great monitor.

I got the 19" version of that Samsung monitor and it's fantastic. 2000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 2 ms response time. Viewing angles are very good.

If you're going to be gaming I'd think you'd want to go that route. Darn handsome monitor too.

I had an LG 19" TN panel a few years ago, and since then have vowed to never allow another TN in my residence. I remember playing Doom 3 on the TN panel, and then trying it on a 2001FP (S-IPS), and realizing for the first time that objects hidden in the shadows could actually be seen without having to cock my head at some strange angle.

I love my S-IPS monitors, but am quite satisfied with my PVA-based 2405 as well. I would go with my 24" PVA over my 20" S-IPS any day- however, given a choice between a 24" TN and a 20" PVA, I would choose the latter every time.

I suppose if you were strapped for cash, wanted a larger pixel pitch, and only surfed the web and/or ran office applications, the 22" TN would be passable.

TNs are the devil! :)

Seriously, if you have the money for the 2007wfp then there really is no comparison.

I actually just retired my S-IPS 2007WFP (for sale btw if anyone's interested) and she was good to me. You wont be disappointed with an S-IPS screen.

Does anyone know how the Dell lottery is fairing in terms of S-IPS panels on the 2007WFP...I did see one on display at a Dell kiosk, and in light of the NEC 20.1" being out of my budget, the Dell does make an attractive alternative...just don't want to get stuck playing the return cycle game until I get a R04 S-IPS.

So not all the 2007WFP are S-IPS panels?

I hear people saying that the R04 S-IPS is the only one to get?

I have a NEC 20WMGX2 and the screen tearing sucks, also does anyone know how it compares on this panel?
