Dell will use AMD's Opteron if Dell's customers demand it or they switch to IBM or HP.

I dont know, but the fact of the matter is that their business models have been less successful than Dell in terms of financial performance.

People can make all the rationalizations that they want, but if Dell could make money off AMD, then they would go AMD. They get the same discounts as any other large vendor like HP, Gateway, etc.

Wingz hit it right on the head. The primary reason Dell isn't using AMD CPUs right now is very simple, supply and demand. Dell is a stickler for having top to bottom products in stock. AMD can't promise that big allocation of CPUs to Dell because they can't make enough. Once AMD goes .09-micron that'll change significantly, but not right now. Wait 6-12 months.

Really, IBM is less financially successful than Dell in most enterprise computing segments? I'd like to see some sources on that. ;)

I find this ironic: we have a certain set of pro-Intel pundits here, who show up as predictably as clockwork to spout their opinions. Nothing wrong with that. However, they are very scarce when it's time to help a n00b troubleshoot his new i875P mobo, or even when the n00b is asking for shopping advice on a Pentium4 purchase.

Personally, I have over 150 motherboard manuals in PDF format totalling about 514MB, and I do the best I can to give detailed assistance to the Intel mobo owners, but sometimes I could use a hand from the people who actually own the product, especially now that I'm down to 56k connection speed and can't easily download large resources. I wouldn't mind some help, Inteliphiles... do a quick scan of the Motherboards, CPU/Processors, General Hardware and Technical Support forums a couple times a day, and see if there is something you can help someone with.

IBM is by far the most profitable company in the computer industry.

I still find it funny that Dell shoves Craperons, err, I mean Celerons, down customers' throats, yet they won't offer AMD processors...

But Wingz is 100% correct. If AMD could supply a steady stream of chips, I'm sure that Dell could work something out. But right now, AMD just doesn't have the juice to do just that.

Thanks Evan and NFS4... Although, conspiracies around broken anti-trust laws are still more fun. ;)

Late 2006, possibly early 2007 (depending on how qualifications/validations go). It'll be a 300mm wafer fab, and they should be on their .065µ process at that time.
