Dell Studio 15 turns itself off repeatedly

I came across a Studio 15 of a friend's that recently started giving him problems. It boots into W7 fine, but after about 10 minutes of doing nothing it slows down to the point where it takes about a minute to change tabs in task manager. A short while later the thing just kills itself. CPU and memory usage are always low. This happens in safe mode too.

I've scanned the thing using MalwareBytes. Nothing came up. I tried running Memtest, and the thing shut down even quicker than if I just left it alone, so I suspect maybe there's something wrong there. Other than the hard drive being faulty, what else could there be? The thing can't stay on long enough to complete any tasks.

Nevermind, figured it out. The thing was idling at around 85C... running one pass of IntelBurnTest promptly shut it down.

Is it a quad core?

What are you going to do to resolve it?

It's an i3, so dual core.

I'm going to update the BIOS. I spent some time on Google and a lot of people had this issue and resolved it by updating the BIOS. If that fails, then all I can think of is fan failure. Either way the fan isn't spinning and it's idling far beyond where it should be idling.
