What's the advantage of buying this drive retail packed?

The drive can be bought OEM elsewhere (sans pci sata card) for about the same price and without the hassle of tracking down a coupon and waiting for a rebate. I would assume most people looking to buy this drive would not need the card anyway.

So, is this warranty longer for the retail version?

I would speculate that the warranty on an OEM version of this drive would be through whomever you bought it from. I bought a OEM WD 100GB drive from Dell and it started squaling after a while. I went to the WD website to check on the drive/enter an RMA, it said it was an OEM drive and to contact my vendor for a replacement.

In Dell's case, it's difficult to figure out what the warranty even is on an OEM drive. I couldn't even get the first Dellion on the phone to tell me, but the final result was that the OEM drive would be warranted for either 90 days, or the expiration of the warranty on my Dell machine (still 1.5 years at that point, so I got a replacement).

Retail is much better, IMHO. WD's advance replacement warranty system is pretty good. I'm on my 4rd external Firewire 200GB drive -- they recently figured out that the drive gets damaged if you yank the power plug from the back of the drive (like the manual advises--there is no on/off switch on the drive) instead of from the wall. (There is a KB article on their site).
