Hey Guys,
I know it's been a while since those scorching PowerEdge 400SC and SC420 deals that Dell used to have on their entry-level server. I have a few buddies using 400SC's as very capable desktops. I saw in my email today that Dell is offering a free upgrade to Pentium D 830 CPU for their SC430. These CPU's retail for $270 on Pricewatch. This makes it at least a warm deal for a cheap dual-core rig for home or server use. It also has a 1-year warranty vs. Dell's normail 90-day warranty on regular desktops. Can anyone bring this price down with coupons?

Oh, and yeah the "upgrade" prices Dell charges are laughable.

Any idea what kind of PCI-E slots are available? I see a PCI-E NIC upgrade would it be too much to hope for a 16X available?

A PCI x8 lane should be more than sufficient for a good graphics card, no? After all, unless you have a dual x16 SLI board if you are running two cards they are running x8 each.

I know that on certain dell SB models you will have to mod the x8 slot to fit a x16 card. They actually have x16 slot but have plastic dividers in it that you have to carefully cut out in order to fit a PCIe video card.
not sure if this model has that though.

The inside of this box looks very much like the 9100 workstation I picked up several hot deals ago. Very quiet case.

I will say to the server vs. workstation 'debate':

This (like my Poweredge SC420) is, IMO, a workstation class machine that accepts ECC RAM. A server is really defined by what its purpose is -> my old Precision 410MT PII/400 is a server in that it serves files, webpages, database, email, subversion, etc...

A "server" class machine, IMO, is more like the PE 1800 and up where you have true hardware RAID and in most cases hot-swappable drives.

These are some decent deals for a small home or business server or a good workstation.

If you happen to be looking for a server, this is a nice deal.

IMHO, server comes into play when discussion of driver support for a server os is questioned.

A 5150 may or may not have dell driver or chipset support for Windows 2003, where it is more likely that a 430sc is going to have that support.

This analogy is completely and utterly flawed. The computers (and a server *is* a computer, afterall) in question both have a dual-core 2.8 GHz P4. Does this mean a Ford Focus has the same engine as a Saleen S7?

Dell SB has a new PowerEdge deal expiring 3/29 to go along with the $499 deal mentioned above. Old deal above now expires on 3/29.

I don't know. From the SC430 Systems User's Guide:

Integrated video with 8 MB of SDRAM video memory (nonupgradable), and a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1280 pixels and 16.7 million colors (noninterlaced).

NOTE: Your computer supports integrated video only.

And, not sure if this supports anything but ECC (E$$) RAM:
A minimum of 256 MB of 533-MHz DDR II SDRAM memory, upgradable to a maximum of 4 GB DDR II SDRAM memory by installing 256-MB, 512-MB, or 1-GB unbuffered ECC memory modules in the four memory module sockets on the system board; single or dual rank.

Am I reading this right? Sorry for the long quotes, but I'm never buying a computer that requires ECC RAM again ($).
 
Just FYI...the video slots in these really do not work well with X16 cards...or really any cards.
A lot of people just get black screens even after physically modding it, it might be a power regulation thing.

Either way though I haven't read about much success so you're warned.
