i can get all the way through formatting (it seems). once the copying files finishes and goes to detecting plug and pray devices, the machine reboots and i am only able to get into windows via safe mode. this is where i find that the disk has not been formatted as all the original data is still on the machine.

i am using the original install disks that came with the machine.

the only error that i can see during boot up is:

-creative sb16 emulation driver requires emm386 or similar
-creative sb16 emulation driver NOT loading

i have tried scandisk but it keeps restarting and will not finish. is the hardware dying or is there something wrong with my installation steps.</FONT>
