Everyone says Seasonic 400W Silencer or Tornado is the best power psu, but at $90. Common, that way too much for a psu. It good and prob. worth it. At I notice my peer running w/ Dells at 400w, hella quite. Anyone here know what Dell runs with. We took off the case, and still couldn't find the type. The label and all info was ripped off the psu. Hmm, $600 , psu can't be too expensive.

Could someone please give an insight, or a quite psu for < $50.

Just make sure the pinouts of the new PSU match those of the existing power supply. Dell has been known to use proprietary PSU hookups - they'll look just like a standard ATX connector, but the wiring is different.
 
Antec true 330 for $48.50, but if you need more power, a 400 watt Antec for $53.50 at newegg. You didn't specify what components need power, so I didn;t know for sure if 330 would do it.
 
Thermaltake 480W PSU for $55. It has a nice black casing, sleeved cables, SATA connectors, and fan knob. Not sure if its compatible with a Dell tho.🙂

I know $50 may not be alot, but by spending the premium, anyone can get the best. The challenge is always to get the best bang for the buck. For instance, got a like ATI 9800PRo w/ 256 bit 128 ddr for $188 , haven't seen anyone beat that yet.

Dell power supplies come in Dell systems. There'd not be much point in paying top dollar for something "spec'd" for Dell, else one old enough that the rest of the Dell system had been replaced already. FWIW, Dell used to use PC Power &amp; Cooling, one of those in a ~410W size will set you back about $85.

The reason why Dell can offer decent PSU even in low priced systems is their high volume contracts. They can pretty much dicatate what it will cost and have anyone bid for the business. If you're buying that many you can do that too, otherwise a Dell PSU will cost MORE than the same exact PSU would otherwise because it has Dell system-specific qualification, for those Dell owners thinking that's exactly what they need. Generally an OEM power supply new (and for system still widely in use) will be worth 30-100% more in resale value.

If you just want a generic answer, buy a Sparkle 350W, they're about $36.
 
MY dell from a year ago has a PSU made by PSP&amp;C. 250watt from a 400sc. Ran a 2.8c with a 6800ultra just fine.

Fortron 350watt can't be beat for the price range.
 
The dell power supply is hella quiet though... I tested one from afew years ago for Voltage stability, the 12V leg was 11.99V and the 5V leg was 5.03.... it was one of the best readings I have seen in a while...

Solitude: Heatware is a rating used by Heatware.com... to the best of my understanding it is almost like an eBay for strictly for computer stuff (may be wrong though) generally when someone lists their heat/hetaware they are talking about how reliable they are in trading/buying/selling
