Dell pre-order on the Canon S200 digital camera, $289.10! S330, $335!

>apparently a lot of people since my other one went for $240 on ebay

That's why I only sell on Ebay, never buy. 😀

Has anybody that ordered S200 from Dell actually received it yet? My date is 4/3/02, but I'm counting on receiving a "delayed" e-mail that day.

worms - Thanks for the great explanation, it's clear I still need to learn a lot about photography. Are there any good "beginners photography" websites you can recommend? I just need the basics, nothing intermediate or advanced level. Thanks again, it's people like you and the other thousands of Ferengi's which makes the Anandtech Hot Deals forum "the Mecca of Hot Deals".

Jono182 - I also have a barely used Kodak DX3700 which I'm hoping to sell. I figure after buying the Kodak EasyShare docking station from OD for $59 after $20 off $75 coupon, it will make it a lot more appealing to eBay buyers. Listen to LukFilm's sound advice, the last thing you want to do is over charge on an item which we Ferengi's can obtain brand new and cheaper elsewhere. Esp since you prob bought yours for $169.99 brand new like I did 😀

Before I forget what's the largest CF the Canon S200 can hold?

I'm sure it can handle 128MB CF, but what about 256MB CF, will it work?

Any CF brands you'd guys recommend which are 100% compatible with Canon digicams?

I've seen several 256MB CF for $89 after rebate/coupons. Maybe it's more cost effective to buy 128MB CF for $39 instead?

I have 256MB CF in my S300, so they can use that and up. Unlike SmartMedia cards, CF cards have a controller built in them, so you can use the highest-capacity CF on the market without worrying about it. I think the highest CF Type I cards are 512MB. I highly recommend Kingston, Viking or Lexar. DO NOT use Sandisk, Delkin, SimpleTech etc. because they are 2x - 3x as slow compared to the three above. I used 8MB CF from Sandisk that came with my camera and when I used 256MB CF from Kingston, the speed difference was big (2x - 3x as fast). Therefore, I recommend Kingston. Viking cards have also good value/performance ratio.

Thanks for the CF brand recommendations LukFilm. I'm glad you didn't suggest "buy this generic X brand from NewEgg.com it's only $9!".

I want low prices but quality is more important to me.

anybody know of any current deals on Kingston, Viking or Lexar CF cards??? There's another post: here for Lexar 128CF (39$), but i think it's only 2x... does it still give better performance over the sandisks and generics?

What about the Sony DSC-P50 from the Dell Web site? it's 299-10%-25 = 244.10. Isn't it a better deal than the Canon? Or is the Canon so much better that it would be worth paying the extra $50. Also the Sony uses memory stick instead of compact flash.

IMHO, I wouldn't buy ANY Sony under $500 because they are crap and you are paying much more for the name, rather than features. Anything over $500 is fine (S75, S85 or F707). Using memory stick is a drawback as well, I don't like many proprietary things.
Regarding the speed of the CF card, the faster, the better, of course. However, it also depends on the camera you are using. You will see a much bigger difference in access speed between Nikon 995 compared to Kodak DC3200 with the same CF card.
Last, but not least, there are no current hot deals on high-speed Lexar, Kingston or Viking cards that I know of. Glad that I got my 256MB Kingston CF for $70 AR a while ago 😉

There is a reason for it to be cheap, I wouldn't get it. However, if it proves to be faster than 2x, I'd jump on it, especially with low shipping charges.

pillage2001,
depending on if you're taking lots of pictures and you need to take them fast, anything at 4x or greater should be good.... it just depends on what you wanna do. i'd also watch the pricing as well: is it worth while to pay alot more for a 16x 128mb CF card opposed to getting a 4x or 8x?? i guess it mostly depends on if you're just speedhungry or need to take lots of pictures in the least amt of time.

testmonkey,
here's a few links to check the reviews out for the P50 - it looks like it's gotten pretty good reviews. i think the selection between Canons and Sonys comes down to your personal preference.

Right. I just need the speed. Don't like to wait. 😀. How do you see what kind of speed the CF card offers? Are all Kingston CF above 10x??

DPreview has a review of a bunch of CF cards and speeds... sometimes i think it's ambiguous and misleading when the companies don't list the speeds (ie: 2x, 4x, 8x, etc...) - this guide helps a little, but sometimes you just have to ask/email the sales people if you're unsure (like in the case of the 39$ 128 Lexar CF over at Outpost)

The lexar seems to have good write/read speed. But are they the same as the one that Outpost is selling?

ah what the hell.. my parents surprised me very much today when they let me buy a $400 sony clie (hey, it's the big 2-0 birthday) as opposed the $200 they initially put down for me... after thinking it thru, it seems rather silly to have a color palm.. i was going to return it and buy a few more things.. make it more worthwhile... well, why not a digicam 😉 An oly 4040 is nice w/ all i can do with it... but this can hold me over and be a pocket cam 🙂

i like my $71 year-old 80mb sandisk. the $86 12x 192mb lexar i have is still in it's packaging two months later.
liked the 48mb lexar 4x i bought fine also (sold to coworker for what i paid)---didn't notice a speed difference.
may take it out tonight and try it though--it's not like i can take it back to cusa now 😛

I agree. I bought a Sony P series a while back for someone, and wasn't terribly impressed by the quality of the build. These Canon's though are built like a tank (well, almost). The sony is mostly plastic. Image quality also leaves something to be desired IMHO.

<< Using memory stick is a drawback as well, I don't like many proprietary things. >>

That's what I used to think. But think again. Memory stick will soon (if not already) overtake SM as the number 2 memory media choice. Hence, more volume = cheaper prices. Besides, I don't think the prices for memory sticks are that outrageous at the moment. And I don't think they are proprietary anymore. The licenced out manufacturing a while back. I know that at least Lexar and Sandisk manufacture them now.

I'm wondering about access speed. What exactly do they affect? Every camera has a built in ram buffer anyway, and I thought it was a two stage memory transfer - from ram to CF. So, in reality, it should affect normal operation unless you are shooting continuous mode agressively, in which case, it wouldn't matter how fast your cf is - you'll still see a noticeable delay.

I think the things it will really affect are image playback and transferring files to your pc.

<< [Right. I just need the speed. Don't like to wait. 😀. How do you see what kind of speed the CF card offers? Are all Kingston CF above 10x?? >>

Same here, fast is very important to me.

Here is my $0.02...

First, I ordered the 330 because I think it is worth it for the extra zoom (I always wish for more zoom than I have...even with my film SLR).

Second, this is a snapshot camera so it will print up to 5x7 every bit as good as any other P&S film camera (This was for whoever was wondering why everyone was so worked up about this deal.)

Third, the SimpleTech 256MB card that I have is an 8x card and is plenty fast. This link was provided earlier. It gives you a good idea of how fast each card is.

Anyway, I'm way excited to have this...it has some great features for a P&S and is still small enough to fit in my pocket.
