Did you notice it's $87 for a CDRW or DVD drive? And $119 for 160gb hard drive...good server base, but buy the extras after and save! :) Good deal

"Integrated graphics"... wonder if they can run Aero? Or even play movies in iTunes, WMP, etc.

Unfortunately that's not the intent - this is a server box. Probably has an ATI Rage chip or some such, with 8MB VRAM.

Still sounds like a decent deal though!

I would call this warm at best.

DELL's are fine if cheap, but this comes with a lot of low value parts.

and the one dell I purchased the 400SC had leaky caps and died in about 2 years.

and dell would not replace the motherboard like Abit did, and Epox, and many other company that had the same problem.

it was the 3.2ghz P4 for $525.00 after $100.000 rebate, it was a steal but end up breaking even as it only lasted 2 years.

this has a cd-rom, almost worthless.
512mb ram, also almost worthless.
cheap motherboard $40.00 value max, seeing as the PCI-E only runs 1x.
80gb hard drive worth maybe $20.00
the cpu is about $80.00
case and PSU like $40.00 max if that.
no keyboard or mouse or OS
and most retail parts have longer warranty then the 1 year dell warranty.

thats $180.00 in parts.

Really? I've helped out a few friends that had dells with leaky caps, the machine would randomly reboot and was totally unstable.

I did a few searches online and found out that dell had extended the warranty on the machines motherboard. Dell came out and replaced it 1yr out of warranty.
I guess everyone has different experiences...

...

I'm still running 2 400SC's that I purchased in 2004. Both have run almost non stop as an HTPC and a NAS/Windows Homeserver since new. ZERO problems with either one. If you had a motherboard die, you could have bought a used one on eBay for about $25 last year. I am in the process of retiring both of mine. They've been great machines for the roughly $200 originally spent on each one(2.8 GHz Pentium 4). Stick 'em in a closet and they run cool and quiet. I don't regret buying either one... GP

Me too! One of the best deals I've ever gotten in on.

Does anyone know if the motherboard is standard ATX? I want to move the system into another box for a 15 drive Unraid Server.

Looks like it is a BTX from the 360 View on Dell's website. Any chances of this having a graphics card slot? What are my options for a dedicated graphics card if it doesn't have a x16 slot?

Thanks!

Sure not for gaming but even for a HTPC to play HD content doesn't it need to have a decent graphics?

Yeah, you'd be better off with a refub'd Inspiron 530/531. They are pretty cheap. Same 1yr warranty too.

I've purchased close to a dozen SC430's over the past few years and have had no problems with any of them.

The SC440 appears to have solid 'ceramic' caps, so leaking is a non-issue now.

So have I, but the SC440 I got in December doesn't seem quiet as solid and no support for keyboard or mouse except USB.

Hmm, no OS, and you can get other refurbs (albeit not necessarily server chassis) with XP Pro for the same price.

Also, if you start adding non-Dell hardware to the mix (for example, 95% of purchasers would want to add memory, at the least), the warranty becomes much weaker.

Finally, not OC-able. So what am I missing? No thread crap intended.

About to pull the trigger : Does anyone know how loud these are? It would be under my (quite large) desk.

Ordered, thought about it some more and canceled. Was going to make this a music server, but I'll just stick with the attached hard drive.

Quiter than a rack mount. If its too loud change the fans or add a controller. I quieted my server down that way.
