For those of you looking for memory upgrades....

Dell is currently listing their 256MB DDR440 ECC memory module for $86.95 - Crucial is listing the same module at $61.99 - both currently have free shipping.

$ 86.95
$-17.39 (Dell 20% S&P coupon)
$ 69.56
$ - 1.57 (FatCash)
$ 67.99

So for essentially $6.00 dollars more (and sales tax for some), you get Dell branded DDR400 ECC memory for near the cost of Crucial direct or NewEgg.com - as well as Dell Tech Support during the term of your warranty.

Now, if there were *ANY* other coupon or discount available this could be a hot deal! Anyone with a Dell 10% off coupon that wants to do a group-buy?

So is there any diff between the crucial and dell memory in terms of performance b/c i thought crucial was pretty reliable with their memory so i dont see where the dell tech support will help u very much?

No one has posted what memory is used in the 256MB DDR400 ECC DIMMs. The Dell 128MB DDR400 ECC DIMM I'm looking at right now, has a lone Micron placard on the DIMM. Data as follows:

MT5VDDT1672AG-40BC3 PC3200U-30330-C1
US BZAC257004 200325
128mb, DDR, 400MHz, CL3, ECC

Chip markings:

0322 1-1
MT 46V16M16
TG -5B C

Well, I battled with them tonight for quite some time ... escalated to a supervisor who specifically mentioned that he was aware that there were numerous threads on message forums such as "FatWallet and AnandTech" ... yes, he actually mentioned both forums ... and that most of the people purchasing these servers were not legitimate businesses yada yada ... and went in so far as basically telling me that we were defrauding the company ...

Well, I laid one out for him because I am own a legitimate business in the state of Pennsylvania and if he requested, I would be more than happy to fax him over a copy of my legitimate business license from my business fax sitting right on my desk beside me right now if he would like ... and that if he would look, the card that I had placed the order under was my business card, not listed under an individual's name ...

It was amazing how apologetic he got all of the sudden ... but to no avail ... he told me there was nothing he could do even though it was their screw up ... he said that corporate had issued a memo earlier that no price matches were to be given to that price offered for that single short period of time ... so I no have a request in to speak with his manager who is supposedly going to be returning my phone call tomorrow morning ... so we shall see what happens ...

Me vs. Dell ... like who is going to win dude ...

but the Dell ram could be identical to the one you get from crucial.

Isn't that what I said - they are the same memory module...

"... - Crucial is listing the same module at .... "

The DIMM/chip markings I posted above are from an 128MB DDR400 ECC OEM DIMM from Dell.

Keep escalating on them. Even if you have to go to Michael Dell :) . Keep pushing the fact that you have a business and that it's not your problem that Dell can't run their order process correctly. Make them know that it is their problem, not yours. Tell them this is not a pricematch situation since you placed an order and they lost it. Threaten to take your PC business to Gateway.

Most of the time when I order RAM from Dell it actually ships from Crucial even though it has a Dell logo on the shipping label. I have checked the shipping address and it's the same as Crucial.

I'd tell them to go screw if they gave me the "but you're not a business" line. I've never seen any requirements on their website to be a business to buy in this section. If they weren't trying to f' some of their customers ALL of the time, they'd have one damn site and only offer discounts based on quantity.

Hmmm sure makes me want to return the 128 Ram and hard drive to give them the extra screw that they deserve for this crap.

But really, dell never specifies that you have to be a business nor can they prove you aren't a free lance (part time web designer/graphics designer/etc). Anyways they never seemed to question buying in SB on deals that make them money (LCDs). But it sure seems like their backordered to hell, cause I ordered on the 4th, but its still in production with the estimated shipping date to be tomorrow.

Yeah I called up on the second to get in on the last deal(the 2.4 for this price instead of the 2.8) because I didn't have a coupon and I told the guy one business name and then said well can you make it this it sounds better and he changed it, I then said I don't really have a business and he said thats ok.

Ordered on the 5th, still in 'production' with no kitting or boxing started. Maybe I'm getting paranoid.

For those of you that are showing "in production" but nothing showing checked, call their 800# for order status. Mine is "in production" with nothing checked however it's in the build stage per the phone call. Hope this helps some.

Hey, thanks! I just called. It said mine is in production, and at the build stage, and reaffirm the shipping date as tomorrow.

For anyone else interested, just call 1-800-WWW-Dell

Mine, also says that's in the build stage. I guess as long as it comes its all good, but this is my replacement computer, so I hate to wait longer than I have to.

The phone order status is more up to date. Thanks for the info.

Hmmm... maybe there should be an ordering from Dell FAQ or something.

Folks, I hate to discourage you, but the phone always says "In the Build stage" when it's in fact "In Production" and no substeps. When you see the site say it's being "Kitted", then it's actually being started.

Well according to the phone system they have been "building" mine since Monday.
If it takes that long, they will be broke soon, lol.

With so many of us getting these, there needs to be a forum that gives the best way to set these machines up as a normal desktop.

I dumbly put the Dell CD in and before I knew it I had setup a couple of drives specific to a server. My XP Pro then setup as drive G.

Now I need to Fdisk the hard drive and start over. ARRRRRGH!

Also, my network port does not work and I've got a yellow ? in system manager.

Let me know if there is a step by step best practice for setting one of these up.

I've had alot of computers, added alot of hardware, and upgraded alot of software, but strangely, this is the first computer that I have had without the operating system installed, and this goes all the way back to an Apple IIe.

Thx.
