Dell power supply enough for Radeon 4670?

4670 doesn't have an external power connector.

Unless Dell failed miserably, If there is a PCIe x16 slot, there is enough power for it.

Well from what I gather, this is a 375W power supply. Not sure how many amps per rail it delivers. Knowing Dell, it's probably a rather cheap part.

I don't even think it has connectors that would plug into the external power of the video card. Not sure about that though.

ETA: I just physically verified...this is a 375W power supply without any external connectors for a video card.

The 4670 is targeted at people just like you. Buy it and enjoy it. Plus, you'll be supporting AMD, which needs all the help it can get right now. :)

Dell 375w psu = 30amps
pcie connector is usually hidden behind psu out of view

My old Dell 305w psu had 22amps

I had a Dell so I would know instead of speculating about it.

Dell doesn't cheap out on their PSUs. They are all well-made and conservatively rated.

People have run 8800GTXs on those "375W"... And I think Ultras too.

Probably enough for a 4870, but might be pushing it. Definitely be enough for a 4850 or 9800GTX.

I run an e7200 + 4850 both overclocked and the most I can pull is 250W in furmark. That's from the wall measured with a Kill-a-watt, so more like 200W output from the supply. I run it on a 380W supply.

Dell supplies are usually pretty good, so I wouldn't worry about babying it too much. Don't let the lack of a PCIe power connector be the deciding factor. A Molex to 6-pin adapter comes in the box and aren't a problem at all to use.

I am in the same situation and can tell you what I have found so far.

I have an xps 410
e6400
2 gig
320 7200 rpm hd
7900gs (from the factory)
2 dvd drives

It does have an external power connector for a graphics card. (at least mine does)

I posted on here 2 days ago looking for advice and then talked to my friends at school. Luckily one of my friends had a 9800 gt he said I could try and see if it worked. I put it in yesterday and it runs fine. I can only run as high as 1280X1024 due to my crappy monitor. I have been playing mostly HL2 based games and Fallout 3. I run in max details at those resolutions without problems. I have about 9-10 hours of gaming on the card so far and it and the computer have been 100% stable. This card would use a lot more power than a 4670 according to all the reviews I have seen.

Im not saying what you should do. I dont know if there will belong term problems. I am not even close to being an expert, just telling you my experience.

I also can't speak of the quality of dells psu's. I am really a newbie. I have done a lot of surfing trying to find answers and it has been confusing. For every forum post that says dell's psu's are crappy you can find one that says they are underrated. Some people say card manufacturers overestimate the power required for a card because of all the overrated psu's, some say its right on.

I have found a couple other posts where people with a xps 410 and dell 375 watt psu are running some of the mid range power hungry cards though.

Since it works for me I am buying the 9800 gt off my friend and will let you know if I have any problems.

Yup.

@new22003: Dell PSU's really are generally decent, and conservatively rated. The reason some folks bash them are 1) user tries to install the top of the line $500 card in a Dell PC that had a 200w PSU, and blows up his system, 2) many so-called "enthusiasts" automatically scoff at anything labeled "Dell" (or HP, or Compaq, etc.) w/o checking facts, and 3) user actually does look at the specs, sees video card "requires" 400w PSU, his Dell has 350w PSU, concludes "Dell PSU sucks".

It's not necessarily that card manufacturers "overestimate" the required PSU as much as they try to take into account that there are very many bad PSU's out there that cannot handle their rated loads and many people buy these, not knowing any better.

Dell underrates their power supplies.
You will have no problems running the HD4670 on Dell XPS 410 :)
Enjoy the card!

I thought I would check back in and put some peoples minds at ease. I have been playing for over a week now with my dell XPS 410 and 375 watt dell PSU + 9800gt with absolutely no problems.

Its a pny geforce 9800 gt 1 gb card BTW

I have been playing fallout 3 in "ultra" setting at my monitors max 1280 X 1024, smooth as glass. I am amazed how much better this game looks on ultra versus my old medium settings.

Left 4 dead with max settings at that resolution is also perfect. This is not a system killing game anyway and ran pretty well on my 7900 gs. But I can turn on AA etc without a thought now.

The ATV racing game "Pure", which my 7900gs would barely run at low, runs perfect at max settings as well.

While I dont have any of the latest system killing games, every single game I have (graw2, rainbow six vegas, hl2, CSS, TDU,DiRT,Race 07, and more) runs perfect without any slowdown or hiccup. I will be getting crysis this weekend and will let you know how things work out.

If you need a band aid to get a little more time out of your old XPS I recommend this card. You can find the 512 mb cards for around $90 at compusa, $95 at newegg.
