Where did you see the free shipping??

NM, I see it, free 3-5 day.

Tempting, I think I could sell these in our local paper.

looking at it the graphics card is alright but hmm... Is it outragous... ponders pocket notices it is not empty... Dang oh well

$600+tax up front.

Specs are decent for $450+tax AR price (low RAM, no DVD, smallish HD)

Throw in that 17" LCD for $600+tax AR does make it hot, but not outrageous 😀

(Basic 17" LCDs cost ~$350?)

ARRRRRRRGH!!! I don't want a cruddy P4 from Dell that's on a platform at the end of its life cycle. It would be nice to see Dell get their heads out of their A$$e$ and start boxing A64's... I suppose in a better would that might happen. But not in this one. Nothing like being tied to a shady backdoor deal with intel to sell thier kit exclusivly, eh?

By the way this is a great deal... that's why I'm so miffed. I would be all over this if that was a A64 2800+. Reguardless if you can get that LCD for an paltry $150 more it makes this deal that much better good find.

Why do all these deals only have 256 megs ram? Would there be an open slot, or are you forced to pay the exorbidant fee for another 256?

Not sure about the open slot(s), but if you wanted to have 512mb you would need to buy two 256mb modules to be able to run it in dual-channel mode. Thus the two 128mb modules that come standard with this deal would not be very useful.

IIRC

This motherboard has four RAM slots, so you can pick up either 2 x 128MB PC2700 (or better) for dual channel, or just 1 x 256MB PC2700 or better in which case the board will only run the memory in single channel.

no the fp is now $170 not 150

Still says add $400....

Edit: You are looking at the higher-priced deal (comes with 160gb drive standard, etc).

Correct, look at the E172FP.

Alright - my bad 🙁

If someone needs a fast machine with 17" LCD, using the normal configuration route for the 4600, a 2.8GHz/800MHz system with 17"LCD ($250 off!!!) is under $800 - better price and performance than this deal

There are two different types of 17" flatscreens that Dell offers, is there are difference between the two? I notice that one is more expensive than the other one.

IIRC the cheaper E172FP is ANALOG only (no DVI).

How does this deal compare with the 400sc ? A little torn between the two ...

It depends on what type of machine you NEED and if you already own an OS.

For an extra $100 this offers: Windows XP Home, GeForce FX 5200 video card and 2 year warranty.

The 400SC is more of a DIY system, but it has more upgradeability IIRC. Memory is a bit more expensive (don't buy it from Dell) and the AGP isn't officially supported by Dell, but other than that from what I hear it is an excellent system.

Also it doesn't include an OS.

Unless you are a video nut there is very little difference between them ...
